Beautiful Romance edged outs Almoonqith to win the Group 2 Zipping Classic

IT’S a sight Australian punters have come accustomed to this spring carnival as another European-trained runner took out the feature race.

Irish-bred Beautiful Romance edged out Almoonqith to win the Group 2 Zipping Classic at Sandown, giving trainer Saeed Bin Suroor a rare win on Australian soil.

The five-year-old mare by New Approach finished seventh in the Melbourne Cup and with that form stacking up, punters backed it into $5.80 at Sportsbet and it rewarded the European followers.

Winning jockey Glyn Schofield credited the win to the strength of the mare which was dropping back from 3200m to 2400m.

“She showed them in the Cup she was really tough,” Schofield said. “Coming into today I came with a lot of confidence.

“Halfway around the corner there she seemed to get tightened for room, she didn’t enjoy that. She just kept coming resolutely to the line.

“I think Almoonqith probably got a length in front of me but he was wide and once the gap really opened up for me she surged strongly and kept it up to the line.

“She’s unbelievably fit and unbelievably strong. If there was another race for her that she could go around in, it wouldn’t worry her at all.”

Godolphin spokesman Andy Makiv was happy with the result after a brave Cup performance.

“She was very brave in the Melbourne Cup and as we know the form from the Melbourne Cup holds up well into this race,” Makiv said.

“She certainly presented with a great chance and ran right up to it.”

Almoonqith franked its spring carnival form with another great effort and fellow European-bred Big Orange battled on well for third to make it an all-European trifecta.

Three-year-old So Si Bon looked a possible winner in the straight, but its run came to an end as the seasoned stayers made their runs.

Glyn Schofield was fined $1000 for using whip four more times before 100m than permitted on Beautiful Romance.
