Qld trainer outed for cobalt in NSW

A Queensland trainer has been disqualified for 12 months after a horse he raced in NSW returned a high level of cobalt.

Toowoomba-based John Smith was outed after a pre-race urine sample taken from Summer Forever before he raced at Lismore on May 7 was found to contain levels of 648 and 590.

Stable foreman Victor Newman was also banned for a year after both pleaded guilty to the charge.

Summer Forever finished seventh in the maiden.

Under new rules to come into force on September 1, the cobalt threshold has been halved from 200 micrograms per litre of urine to 100.
