The Q22

Group Two Betting Guide
Date: Saturday, June 15, 2024
Location: Eagle Farm Racecourse
Prize Money: $1,200,000
Distance: 2200m

The Q22 is Queensland’s second richest race worth $1.2 million under Weight-for-Age conditions at Group 2 level over 2200m at Eagle Farm.

Initially work shopped by Racing Queensland in 2019, the Q22 is a new race that’s part of a rejuvenated Brisbane winter carnival, one that was fully on again in 2021 following Covid-19 lockdowns in 2020.

In an attempt to get three-year-olds to race into The Q22, Racing Queensland will offer $100,000 in cash or $250,000 QTISx vouchers to any horse that runs first or second in the Group 1 Queensland Derby or Queensland Oaks and then back it up to run top-three in The Q22.

To ensure the quality of runners in the race, Racing Queensland announced there are six “win and you’re in” races offering a ballot exemption to the Q22. These races are the Queensland Guineas, Doomben Cup, Queensland Derby, Lord Mayor’s Cup, Queensland Sapphire Stakes and the Queensland Oaks.

The winner of The Q22 receives ballot-exempt entry into the Caulfield Cup (2400m)

The inaugural running of The Q22 was won by the Annabel Neasham-trained Zaaki, with James McDonald on board in 2021.

2022 The Q22 result

1stWithout A Fight (+180)
2ndNonconformist (+310)
3rdDuais (+130)

Recent The Q22 results

  • After claiming the Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup first-up, Without A Fight gave his rivals a galloping lesson second-up in the Group 2 The Q22 at Eagle Farm, letting down with his customary turn of foot to claim victory over Nonconformist and Duais. The six-year-old gelded son of Teofilo was sent over to Australia in November to race in the 2022 Melbourne Cup, but as we all saw, he finished a lacklustre 13th before being transferred to the Anthony & Sam Freedman stable for his second Australian campaign. Since returning to the racetrack in Queensland, Without A Fight has been outstanding, claiming the Lord Mayor’s Cup in a canter before proving way too good in The Q22, signalling his claims at a Victorian Spring Carnival tilt at the Cups. As usual, Serpentine set a strong tempo out in front with Kolding, before he got the better of his co-leader and put up three or four lengths on the rest of the field; however, this set the race up for the race winner, Nonconformist and Duais to charge home from the back. There wasn’t a lack of money for the winner, as he opened earlier in the week as the clear favourite, and he held favouritism throughout betting to jump as a clear $2.80 favourite with online bookmakers.
  • There was no doubt Numerian would perform well in the $1.2 million Q22 at Eagle Farm – the biggest question was how much he’d benefit from a Good 4 track. But there was no need to worry about the surface, the six-year-old embracing the conditions to take an early lead and hang on in outstanding fashion to win by a length, with Tommy Berry aboard. The $21 outsider with online betting sites was sent for well-earned spell after coming into the Q22 staying race over 2200m fresh from a Gosford Cup victory on May 7.
  • Having won the Hollindale Stakes and then the Doomben Cup, the Annabel Neasham-trained Zaaki was always going to take some beating in the first running of The Q22. Having won the Doomben Cup by seven-lengths, Zaaki managed to put a more conservative 1.5 lengths on his rivals to claim the majority of the $1.2 million on offer in the Q22. Zaaki settled on the back of race leader Reloaded and when asked to go, Zaaki responded under James McDonald and simply never looked like getting beaten.
