Where | Eagle Farm Racecourse – 230 Lancaster Rd, Ascot QLD 4007 |
When | Saturday, June 14, 2025 |
First Race | 11:43am AEST |
Stradbroke Handicap Day is finally upon us, with a stacked nine-race program set for decision at Eagle Farm on Saturday. The Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) takes top billing and is supported by the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) and The Q22 (2200m) to amplify Queensland’s premier raceday.
Perfect conditions are forecast in Brisbane this week, meaning the track should come up a Good 4. The rail will be out 4m for the entire circuit, with Stradbroke Day set to commence at 11:43am AEST.
Stradbroke Handicap tip: Private Eye
Private Eye is an old marvel and can add a second win at the highest level on Saturday. The son of Al Maher does give 4kg to race favourite War Machine, but that is due to his obvious class edge in a handicap. There will be speed for days early on in the Straddie, which sets things up perfectly for a backmarker with a sharp finish. With four wins and two minors to his name when fresh, Private Eye will take a power of beating at a big price if he is anywhere near his best.

Race 8 – #1 Private Eye (10)
7yo Gelding | T: Joseph Pride | J: Nash Rawiller (57kg)
JJ Atkins tip: Grafterburners
Grafterburners struggled on a Heavy 10 when beaten by 4.7 lengths in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m), but back on top of the ground and up to 1600m looks to suit him perfectly in the 2025 JJ Atkins. The son of Graff was only beaten by a half-length the start prior in the Group 2 Spirit Of Boom Classic (1200m) by Cool Archie, who will start as favourite with horse racing bookmakers on Saturday, but that runner seems to prefer the sting out of the ground. Craig Williams will have the colt in a perfect position from barrier two, and barring any bad luck in running, Grafterburners should prove too hard to hold out.
JJ Atkins
Race 6 – #2 Grafterburners (2)
2yo Colt | T: Kelly Schweida | J: Craig Williams (57kg)
The Q22 tip: Kovalica
The Chris Waller-trained Kovalica saves his best racing for Queensland, and that has been evident when chasing home Antino and Q22 rival Fawkner Park in his last two starts. Despite being well beaten by Antino in both the Hollindale Stakes (1800m) and Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m), the son of Ocean Park has finished within a length of Fawkner Park on both occasions. Kovalica is double the price of his rival on Saturday, but with three wins from four Eagle Farm starts, conditions will likely suit the five-year-old gelding down to the ground.
The Q22
Race 9 – #4 Kovalica (7)
5yo Gelding | T: Chris Waller | J: Nash Rawiller (59kg)
Brisbane Cup Tip: Etna Rosso
Etna Rosso was massive in defeat in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (2400m) after being forced to travel wide with no cover throughout. The son of Decorated Knight should have no such issues in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (3200m) having drawn perfectly in barrier five under James McDonald. Race favourite Campaldino will make this a genuinely run affair, but as long as Etna Rosso can see out the two miles, he looks to be the one who will handle the trip the best.
Brisbane Cup
Race 3 – #3 Etna Rosso (5)
5yo Gelding | T: Chris Waller | J: James McDonald (56.5kg)
Best Bet at Eagle Farm: Shaggy
Shaggy could not have been more impressive in his initial campaign, and on his return from a 15-week spell, he simply looks a class above his rivals in the Listed Oxlade Stakes (1200m). He won in impressive fashion at Randwick during the autumn, which reads better than anything he faces on the weekend. The Sandbar gelding is a natural front-runner, which should offset the tricky barrier (16), and with the in-form Ashley Morgan in the saddle, the plan looks simple: jump, lead and win.
