2016 Hobart Cup – free betting tips and latest news

Wales

A quality field has assembled for the $200,000 Hobart Cup on Monday including the well-performed Metaphorical and last start winner Wales which has a rich pedigree to live up to.

The Richard Laming-trained son of Redoute’s Choice is a half-brother to three-time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva and winning the Hobart Cup would make a nice addition to its record.

The six-year-old has been patiently handled throughout its career, having only its 17th start this Monday, but classy performances such as its second placing behind Junoob in the Ballarat Cup have bookmakers treating it wearily.

Wales is the equal $4.40 favourite with the Peter Moody-trained Metophorical which gets the services of Damien Oliver and is coming off a summer campaign where it placed behind Danestroem and Signoff.

It was last seen running fourth behind Second Bullet, which races in the Robert Hunter Handicap at Caulfield on Saturday, and that should be a good form guide for the Hobart Cup.

There are plenty of local chances capable of winning so sign up to CrownBet.com.au for the best Hobart Cup odds available.

Chris Waller lines up Quick Strike which hasn’t won for some time, but comes into this with a handy form line. The four-year-old finished fourth behind Sir John Hawkwood in the Xmas Cup at Randwick and fifth behind Vilanova in the Tatts Cup.

Jockey Craig Williams is riding in great form this season and dropping down in weight to 55.5kg will make it tough to beat.

Up Cups is a local chance for trainer David Brunton which has won back-to-back quality races. The five-year-old defeated race rivals Player One and Geegees Goldengirl at its last two starts and it carried 59kg to victory last start.

Bookmakers have it on the third line of betting at $5.50 and is worth an each way bet, but our top pick is still Wales which should prove awfully tough to beat off its recent win at Moonee Valley.
