From 1937 to 1978, the WA Guineas was classified as a Principal Race before being upgraded to Group 2 level from 1979 onwards.

The WA Guineas used to be held in mid-November, but since 2012, the race has been run on Railway Stakes Day at Ascot, later in the month.

Notable winners of the WA Guineas include Amelia’s Jewel (2022), Arcadia Queen (2018), Ihtsahymn (2013), Playing God (2010), Megatic (2007), Summer Beau (1996), Vows (1991), Ngawyni (1975), Millefleurs (1972), Jolly Aster (1966), Raconteur (1952) and Gay Prince (1938).

Recent WA Guineas results

  • The Grant & Alana Williams-trained Storyville ($4.20) has proven too classy in the Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m) at Ascot on Saturday afternoon, producing a stunning turn-of-foot in the concluding stages to claim the $500,000 feature. She was on the one-week backup after a dominant win in the Group 3 Champion Fillies Stakes (1600m) at the same course and distance last Saturday; however, the three-year-old was relatively unwanted late in betting with horse racing bookmakers, as all the money came for the Neville Parnham-trained September Born ($2.00 with Neds) prior to the jump. William Pike was happy to smoke the pipe in behind a hot tempo throughout the journey, with Declan Bates adopting Pride Of Jenni like tactics aboard London’s Image ($17.00) as she bowled along to put a gap in her rivals. September Born appeared to get every chance racing in the one-one but never looked like to figure as the sprint went on, with all the runs coming down the centre of the course. Olympic Park ($14.00) and The Merryman ($34.00) were storming home to mount a late challenge, but it was to no avail as Storyville closed off best to claim back-to-back features.
  • Neville and Steven Parnham combined with Zipaway ($6.50) to take out the Group 2 WA Guineas at Ascot, conquering the same feat as his sire Playing God, who won the same race in 2010 for the same combination. After running fourth in the Listed Fairetha Stakes last start, Neville Parnham said that his gelding was going to be might hard to beat in the WA Guineas next start and he has been proven right, thanks to a great steer by his son, Steven. Zipaway jumped well from the barrier and settled a lot closer to the speed than his previous starts; however, it didn’t matter, as Parnham went for his mount at the top of the home straight and kicked clear to put up a two-length lead on the rest of the field. Although the odds-on favourite Super Smink ($1.85) and A Lot Of Good Men ($21.00) flashed home from the back of the field, there wasn’t a worry if you were on the leader, as he held the challengers at bay in the final 100m to record an impressive victory.
  • Amelia’s Jewel (-111.11) recorded an emphatic victory in the $500,000 Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m). The star filly stormed home to win by just under a length after settling near the rear of the field. After jumping as an odds-on favourite, the daughter of Siyouni was never in trouble as Patrick Carbery kept her in clear air. Carbery pushed the button on his filly, and when he did, she ran down Bustler (+320) and Saintorio (+1600) within 100m to record her second Group 2 victory from six starts.
  • Grant & Alana Williams, Bob Peters and William Pike have taken out their third WA Guineas in five years, with Treasured Star (+190) taking the 2022 edition of the Group 2 contest. The daughter of Toronado sailed home down the outside under the urgings of WA’s leading jockey to record a dominant 1.75-length victory over Stay Safe (+4000) and a further length over stablemate Devoted (+2000).
  • Watch Me Dance (+750) became the second filly in over 60 years to complete the WA Champion Fillies Stakes/WA Guineas double. The Steve Wolfe-trained galloper joined Arcadia Queen who completed the double just two years prior in 2018. After settling outside the leader Em Tee Aye (+3000), the two settled down to fight out the finish in the final 200m, with the daughter of I’m All The Talk getting the better of the leader, while Dom To Shoot (+400) ran home into third place.
  • War Saint (+3000) and Kaycee (+650) had to be split by the judge in a very tight photo finish in the Group 2 WA Guineas, with the former getting his nose down on the line to grab the photo. With both gallopers hailing from the Neville Parnham stable, it gave the stable the quinella; however, it would be the rougher of the two that would get the victory. The son of War Chant led every step of the way in the Guineas, and with 200m to go, it appeared as though his stablemate would run him down, but the filly couldn’t get past him. Red Can Man (+1100) battled on gamely to hold onto third place just behind the top two.
