After a massive win on debut at Pakenham, Veight from the Tony & Calvin McEvoy yard has gone onto record another big victory in the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes over 1400m at Flemington, defeating Apulia by two lengths eased down.

Ganbare and Sassy Boom set up a solid tempo for the 1400m event and as the field rounded the home turn, Damian Lane on Veight looked to be in a sticky position on the inside of horses a behind some slowing runners.

However, as Amur went past Lane and the eventual winner, Lane was able to push his horse into the clear and once he pushed the button, this very smart colt exploded and took off to put a space on his rivals in the final 100m and the race was over within a few strides.

Just like there was in the Group 1 Australian Guineas last weekend, we had another good race marred by a fall, with Dubenenko and Flyball falling early in the race with their jockeys Craig Williams and Jamie Kah going to hospital to be further assessed post-race.

After the massive win, Calvin McEvoy spoke post-race about their very promising colt and what could be next for this aptly named runner.

“That was a really fantastic win,” McEvoy said.

“We just feel that he’s got so much improvement left to come, which is what makes todays win even more special.

“We always thought that seven furlongs and a mile was gonna be where its at, and its fantastic for the connections.”

When asked whether the Champagne Stakes or the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes was next on the cards for Veight, McEvoy confirmed that the Sires’ would be his next start.

Damian Lane has ridden this colt at his two career race starts so far, and it will be very hard to get him off going forward.

“Just firstly, thoughts are with Craig (Williams) and Jamie (Kah) I think was it,” Lane said of the jockeys that fell in the race.

“This horse was well placed today and he was well prepared.

“It was such a smart decision to bypass the Blue Diamond and set him for this race, because I don’t think it would have suited him.

“He’s got good ability, today he was able take a sit and even though he’s a bit field shy, but when he got into the clear he really let rip.”

Veight is now the second favourite at $6 in the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes futures market with online betting sites.
