Canterbury racecourse

Canterbury Park Racecourse is one of the many tracks owned and operated by the Australian Turf Club and is considered one of the most family friendly environments in NSW horse racing.

Known for the Friday night racing summer series in Sydney, the evening racing scene would be virtually non-existent without the operation of Canterbury Park Racecourse, which underwent redevelopment in 2020.

Canterbury Park Racecourse

Canterbury racecourse provides racegoers with free entry for these events and with plenty of activities for people of all ages – including live music, food stalls and a carnival atmosphere to boot.

The racing produced at Canterbury continues to thrive and improve, with quality Listed races scheduled throughout the season to go along with regularly scheduled mid-week racing every year.

The innovation of Canterbury Racecourse to adapt to the likes of Moonee Valley in Victoria has provided a new avenue for horse racing in NSW and now finds itself a major hub for the more fun side of the industry.

Canterbury Racecourse address & how to get there

Canterbury Park Racecourse is located at King Street, Canterbury, NSW, 2193 and is approximately 11km from the Sydney CBD.

Located in the inner west of Sydney, Canterbury is one of the easier racetracks in NSW to navigate to, with plenty of modes of transportation on offer.

As many locals would know, finding a Taxi or Uber to take you to track is a simple option for racegoers; however, it can be a pricey prospect if you live out of the vicinity of Canterbury. It’s a good thing then you can easily use the major trainline from Sydney Central Station to take you directly to Canterbury Train Station, making it a roughly 10-minute walk to the entrance.

Be sure to prepare your best mode of transportation and check the scheduled trains or buses so you don’t miss out on the first race.

Canterbury Racetrack dimensions & details

Canterbury Park Racecourse is considered a tight-turning track and one of the smaller operated in the state of NSW. It has a circumference of 1,567m and has a short straight of 308m to the winning post.

The course proper has multiple chute positions, usually reserved for the 1550m start nearest to the winning post, and the sprint trips over 1200m and 1250m also utilise a chute before finding the main running rail.

Major races held at Canterbury

While the quality of racing at Canterbury Park isn’t always the highest, it still does play host to a couple of Listed events. These are reserved for the sprinters in the Canterbury Classic (1100m) and the PJ Handicap (1200m).

The summers series has provided owners with more avenues for strong prizemoney as well, so it’s a time of year when we see some major stables bring some top line horses to the races.
