The Everest

THE world’s richest race on turf is almost upon us.

From the moment The Everest was announced, it was expected to draw the absolute cream of the international crop of runners, and while that did not materialise as expected, we still have a world-class field of familiar faces taking to the track.

Will it be the ‘thunder from down-under’ Chautauqua that lights up the Randwick track again, or will it be boom five-year-old Vega Magic that wins its fifth-straight race en route to the hefty winner’s cheque?

We took a look at the four best candidates heading into the $10 million feature and identify the best winning hope in the field.

Chautauqua form

The three-time TJ Smith Stakes winner Chautauqua was installed as the favourite to take this race out after its extraordinary third success in the group one event, but after failing to finish in the first half of the field in its last two runs since resuming in September, there are some doubts around the great grey.

Let’s not forget though, Chautauqua was written off prior to that sensational win too.

We just think this race has been targeted by connections a long way out and the runs prior to Saturday’s feature are all about getting the gelding cherry-ripe for the run. From the ideal barrier draw the seven-year-old will trail the field and if its close enough will storm over the top of them.

She Will Reign form

Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign comes into the Everest on the back of a barnstorming run on its Melbourne debut on September 29.

Taking out the Moir Stakes by less than a head, the filly proved it is capable of overcoming adversity, finishing hard to the line and tackling the counter-clockwise Victorian racing style.

Now the three-year-old returns to the Sydney-style of racing where it has excelled in the past and will be a huge threat, despite drawing barrier two. We expect the Protelli filly to be a major player once again in the first-ever running of the Everest.

Vega Magic form

You know you have a superstar horse on your hands when you draw the carpark and still retain favouritism going into Australia’s richest race.

Drawing barrier 10 in the Everest has been no issue for Memsie Stakes-winner Vega Magic, which has actually firmed even further at Sportsbet following the draw after opening at $5.50.

The horse has been in absolutely sensational form and is arguably the best sprinter in the country right now. The only query is the Sydney-style of racing, but after witnessing a track gallop in person on Benalla Gold Cup day, we have no doubts it will handle the right-hand turn with aplomb.

You do not win four-straight races, including two group ones and a group three, by being a dud. Vega Magic is the justified favourite going into The Everest.

Redzel form

Redzel

Another horse hunting for a fifth-straight win is Redzel.

The gun five-year-old just knows how to win, and is a course specialist at Randwick, given it has won its last three starts at the Sydney track. In an incredible run of form at the track, the gelding’s worst Randwick finish was a second-placed finish in The Galaxy on a heavy 10 track. The other four runs dating back to 2015 have resulted in wins.

Conditions will not matter on the weekend either. Redzel has got the job done on soft, heavy and good tracks. Jumping from barrier four will also provide the perfect sit for the horse which will look to camp on or around the speed and put them to bed from the head of affairs.

Final Verdict

What a race we have on our hands this weekend.

There are group one winners, red-hot form and hall of fame candidates everywhere you look in this field, and in all honesty each of the four elects are capable of taking this race out if they get conditions and a race to suit.

The more we look at the race however, the more Redzel stands out from the pack.

The form is outstanding for the horse, both at the track and in recent times, and Peter Snowdon gave his elect a strong push during the week. Snowdon said when Redzel gets a month break from racing “he’s almost unbeatable.”

Guess what? It will be almost a month to the day this Saturday when Redzel saddles up for The Everest.

We think the Randwick form holds true and Snowdon elect runs the race of its life. Bet now to get $7.50 on the Redzel at Sportsbet.
