What Rosehill Gardens Races
Where Rosehill Gardens Racecourse – James Ruse Dr, Rosehill NSW 2142
When Saturday, March 13, 2021
First Race 12:35pm AEDT

It is Coolmore Classic Day at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, with nine races set to go around, we have just the one Group 1 race in the Coolmore Classic. Other draw cards on the day include the Magic Night Stakes and the Pago Pago Stakes, which offer the final two tickets in the Golden Slipper next week. The track is currently rated a Good 4, but rain has been forecast, so we are in a holding pattern in regards to how the track will be come race day. The rail will be in the true position and the first is set to go at 11:35am.

Race 1 – CATANACHS HANDICAP (1900 METRES)

It is a bit of a tricky way to start on Saturday, but race favourite Great House does look extremely hard to beat. The import won his second start in Australia over 2000m at this track in good fashion, and then got a long way out of his ground when third to Yonkers at Randwick when a fast-finishing third. He rises significantly in weights, but drops 10 benchmark points to a BM78. Drawn well in gate six under Tommy Berry, he can settle closer and be returning to the winner’s stall. Mars could be the knockout hope, while Miss Redoble will be a chance if the rain comes.

Race 2 – CERRONE MAGIC NIGHT STAKES (1200 METRES)

The fillies get their last chance at winning their way into the Golden Slipper in the Magic Night. In what is another tough race with differing form lines, we are going to side with the Blue Diamond form out of Melbourne and put Arcaded on top. The Street Boss filly won her first two starts in very handy fashion, before being beaten nine lengths in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes three weeks ago. The form out of that race has been franked, with Anamoe winning in Sydney last weekend, and Artorious trialled very nicely on Thursday morning in Sydney. The Sydney fillies haven’t been too impressive to date, so she might be better than them.
Selections: 2-3-1-5

Race 3 – BOWERMANS COMMERCIAL FURNITURE PAGO PAGO STAKES (1200 METRES)

This is the colts and gelding’s chance to make the final field in the Slipper, with this a genuine race in two in our book. The Godolphin blue comes to the fore so often this time of year, and we expect to see plenty of different coloured caps in next week’s feature. Ingratiating finished second in the Blue Diamond last start, a week after winning well in the Talindert Stakes at Flemington. That form looks better than what most of these have been running in, and he gets every chance from barrier seven. Hilal is the only other winning chance, with the market reflecting that. He was super on debut, coming from near last on the Kensington track to win, before finishing one and a half lengths off O’President in the Skyline.
Selections: 2-6-1-3

TODAY’S BEST: Race 4 – BISLEY WORKWEAR SKY HIGH STAKES (2000 METRES)

There isn’t too much to be said about this race. Colette is the best horse in the race, she is racing in terrific form and was only just beaten by Verry Elleegant in the Chipping Norton Stakes two weeks ago. She gets a lovely run in the one-one from gate seven under Rachel King and will be going on to justify her short quote.

Next Best: Race 5 – CITY TATTERSALLS CLUB MAURICE McCARTEN STAKES (1100 METRES)

Talented mare Wandabaa resumes in a winnable race over 1100m at Group 3 level. The four-year-old mare gets in on the minimum, with 53.5kg under Jason Collett which will be advantageous, and she should get a lovely run in transit from barrier four, on the back of a decent tempo. She is undefeated first-up, can do it on wet or dry, has only missed the place once at Rosehill and has won three from five over the 1100m trip. She has had two good winning trials in preparation for this, and her Spring form was certainly good enough to stack up.
    Selections: 9-5-2-1

Race 6 – CHANDON PHAR LAP STAKES (1500 METRES)

The Group 2 1500m event is likely to be decimated by scratchings, so it is a bit hard to have an early play, but we do think that Hungry Heart is the one who can return to the winner’s circle. The Frankel filly has just the one win to her name, but she has raced well all Spring in the Princess Series finishing second in all three runs. Poland could get a soft run in front should the field be halved, and has fitness on his side, but we slightly question the Victorian form, although Amish Boy ran third in the Newmarket after being runner up to Poland in the Autumn Stakes.
    Selections: 6-1-7-4

Value Bet: Race 7 – COOLMORE CLASSIC (1500 METRES)

The sole Group 1 of the afternoon is an absolute lottery. With the uncertain weather around, it makes it a touch tricky to get a good gauge on the race, so our top two picks will be split depending on the weather. If it rains and we race on a Soft or Heavy track, we want to be with four-year-old mare Icebath. The Brad Widdup-trained mare was only narrowly defeated by Colette in last years’ Golden Eagle, and has resumed nicely with two third placings. She maps to get the drop on them in the run from barrier six, and will have the fitness to be finishing over the top. If the track stays a Good 4, Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott will have a big chance of going back to back in the race, when they saddle up three-year-old filly Vangelic. She was great coming just off the speed in the Surround Stakes, and drops six kilograms in this, meeting race favourite Forbidden Love 4.5kg better. She can find the front under Kathy O’Hara and be too hard to run down.
    Selections: 18-6-3-9

Race 8 – HYLAND RACE COLOURS AJAX STAKES (1500 METRES)

The Ajax Stakes is a bit of a puzzle, with the two market fancies mapped to settle at opposite ends of the field. Criaderas will be back against the fence from the inside alley but will eat up 1500m, while Buffalo River will be trying to last the entire 1500m while rolling along in front. For that reason, we are going to side with a bit of an obscure pick in Looks Like Elvis. The six-year-old gelding was really good first-up when fourth behind Think It Over. He maps well and will be much better second-up, as is often the case.
    Selections: 10-11-7-1

    Race 9 – CELLARBRATIONS HANDICAP (1350 METRES)

Tipping that whoever decides on racebook order in Sydney doesn’t have a punt and need a get out, because the final race of the day is week in, week out borderline impossible. This week is no different, with a field of 16 horses set to go around, with the favourite being a $5 chance. Holyfield is an $11 chance and looks a good each-way play in what is a tough race. A winner of four from nine, the three-year-old colt is undefeated at Rosehill where he has won at Group 3 level in the Ming Dynasty, before heading to Melbourne and running third behind Glenfiddich and Cherry Tortoni in the Stutt Stakes. He goes great fresh, can be effective on top of the ground with the sting out of the ground, and has drawn to go forward and put himself in the race. Tommy Berry can bookend the card.
    Selections: 5-6-9-1
