Look out, Melbourne Cup Carnival – there’s a new race in Sydney that is set to take some of the shine away from Victoria.
Run at Rosehill Gardens on the same day as the VRC Derby, the race was implemented to give four-year-olds a feature as part of the ‘Golden’ series which also includes the Golden Slipper Stakes (2YO) and Golden Rose Stakes (3YO).
The 1500m event is quickly becoming a goal for many trainers and connections, purely based on the ridiculous amount of money on the line.
The inaugural Golden Eagle was run on November 2, 2019.

2024 Golden Eagle Replay & Results
1st – Lake Forest (+1800)
2nd – Lazzat (+110)
3rd – Tom Kitten (+260)
Golden Eagle results & past winners
- The European raider Lake Forest ($18.00) came with a withering burst to claim victory in the $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill, with William Haggas and Cieren Fallon combining to secure victory for the UK. The Northern Hemisphere three-year-old come through some quality form heading into Saturday, but was relatively unwanted in the market, starting at a good each-way price with the top Australian bookmakers. It was race full of hard-luck stories, as fellow European contender Lazzat ($4.80) led them out at a strong clip throughout, while the team Hawkes-trained Makarena ($51.00) continued to press on from a wide draw. Well-supported favourite Ascoli Piceno ($3.20) didn’t have much luck from barrier 17, with Joao Moreira being cast wide throughout the journey, while the likes of Stefi Magnetica ($12.00) and Tom Kitten ($10.00) cut the corner looking for a run in the home straight. Lazzat was second past the post, however, Stefi Magnetica copped a severe check in the concluding stages with Lazzat rolling significantly in the final furlong, resulting in a protest fifth v second.
- The Golden Eagle (1500m) is heading to the land of the rising sun, as Japanese star Obamburumai ($7.00) powered to victory in the $10 million feature. Jockey Joshua Parr was the beneficiary of an unfit Yutaka Take who was unable to make his way down under, allowing Parr to take the reins aboard the Keiji Yoshimura-trained colt. It was a lovely rail-hugging steer by Joshua Parr bouncing evenly from barrier two to hold a position, leaving the Godolphin duo of Golden Mile ($41.00) and Pericles ($13.00) to set a slow tempo up on speed. Zac Lloyd had seemingly pinched a winning break on his rivals, as Hawaii Five Oh ($4.00) and Amelia’s Jewel ($3.60) found nothing but trouble throughout the journey. Pericles then looked the winner with 200m to run, before Obamburamai charged through the gap to score an incredible victory.
- The team of Peter Moody and Luke Nolen have once again combined to take out the Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens with I Wish I Win in a scintillating performance. A winner two starts back in the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1300m) at Sandown, the four-year-old Savabeel gelding then ran a last start fifth in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) leading into today’s feature event. Jumping from barrier 10 at $8.50 odds with online bookmakers, I Wish I Win came from wide out at the rear of the big field around the turn to storm down the middle of the straight, breaking clear at the 200m to go on with the nose win from the fast finishing Fangirl ($12) with Gypsy Goddess ($12) in third. The win takes the gelding’s career earnings to over $5.5 million with 5 wins and seven placings over his 13 start career.
- The Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained I’m Thunderstruck knuckled down inside the final furlong to claim the Golden Eagle by a nostril. Despite looking like he was going to struggle to win, I’m Thunderstruck exploded late on in the piece under the urgings of Hugh Bowman to claim Count De Rupee in the final stride of the 1500m event. The win in the Golden Eagle backed up his win in the Toorak Handicap and further stamped himself as one of the best middle distance horses in Australia.
- As many astute judges predicted, Godolphin mare Colette would relish the Heavy 9 conditions dished up on Golden Eagle Day, with the daughter of Hallowed Crown storming home down the centre of the track to win in a narrow photo with Icebath, giving Koby Jennings his first major race success. Jumping from barrier six, Colette settled with only five horses behind her before coming to the extreme outside in the straight. Icebath made it a thrilling finish, bursting through the centre of the field to force a tricky photo for the judges to split.
- The Chris Waller-trained Kolding went on to win the $7.5 million Golden Eagle with Glen Boss on board. It looked to have been a hard watch for Kolding backers with gelding continually finding trouble throughout the home straight. But after a patient ride from Boss, the gap appeared and he ambushed the leader, Sunlight, in the last 50m to claim the inaugural Golden Eagle.
