Coolmore Classic 2021 racing preview – Saturday, March 13

The sole Group 1 this weekend is the $600,000 Coolmore Classic for the fillies and mares at Rosehill Gardens. A field of 18 is set to face the starter in a bid to join the likes of Sunline, Typhoon Tract and Dixie Blossoms on the race’s honour roll. Three-year-old filly Forbidden Love is the $6 favourite for the 1500m race after decimating her same-aged rivals in the Group 1 Surround Stakes last start. Chaillot ($8) is the only other runner in single figures. There isn’t a great deal of speed in the race, but we can expect to see Vangelic and Sovereign Award leading, while Sweet Deal, Forbidden Love and Mizzy shouldn’t be too far away.

Icebath looks beautifully placed in a race that has been a target for some time. After running a narrow second to the very talented Colette in last year’s Golden Eagle, the four-year-old mare has come along nicely this campaign with two third placings in the Triscay and the Guy Walter Stakes. The track is likely to be rain affected, which will suit her down to the ground as she peaks third up at a suitable 1500m. Jumping out of barrier six under Kerrin McEvoy, she will be able to settle in a prime position just in behind a steady tempo and look to finish right over the top of them. She can reel off some cracking late splits, so if she brings her A-game, we think she can win this.

Vangelic was super in the Surround Stakes despite finishing three lengths off Forbidden Love, and she gets a key advantage against her three-year-old rival here. The Waterhouse & Bott filly drops 6kg in the weights, getting in with just 50kg under Kathy O’Hara, and that 4.5kg advantage on Forbidden Love could be huge given her racing pattern. With no weight and an ideal draw in gate five, she will nearly lead this big field and hope to go one better than her two placings at Group 1 level. This is a touch trickier than the Surround, where she was up against her own age group, but she is in very well and could prove hard to run down.

Krone continued to frank the Queensland summer form when defeating Tricky Gal and Icebath to win the Guy Walter Stakes in Sydney last start, but she rises significantly in the weights and has drawn a sticky gate (1). Nonetheless, she is rock-hard fit, loves a wet track and won at Rosehill in the Darby Munro 12 months ago, so we are happy to include her in the numbers. Her win in the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares race was a cracker, launching late to beat the hot favourite, Athiri, and she then franked that by winning last start by nearly two lengths. The 1500m is a slight query, but she can be a bit closer from the inside alley under Tim Clark. She is a knockout hope.
