Punt Drunk: Multis destroyed as Zaaki fails to fire

Punters despair over Zaaki defeat

On today’s edition of Punt Drunk, we have a look over the weekend that was. Zaaki had his colours lowered in the Doomben Cup, while Des Forster cheered Apache Chase home in the only way she knows how. It was a super weekend of racing in Brisbane, and it’s only going to get better over the coming weeks.

MAKE IT STOP

Fair dinkum. Zaaki was $1.50 into $1.20 in Saturday’s Doomben Cup as he looked to make it back-to-back wins in the $1 million race. Unfortunately for every single punter in Australia who had multis with Zaaki as the anchor leg, your money was confetti at about the 200m. He didn’t let down like he usually does on the firm Eagle Farm track, as promising import Huetor loomed up on the rails and shot through. Zaaki only managed third – with the margin between third and fourth no greater than a fly’s shit.

Grim.

“DON’T GO SLOW”

There were similar scenes on this very day 12 months ago when Apache Chase led all of the way in the Fred Best Classic to book his spot in the Stradbroke Handicap, but this one meant so much more to Des Forster. The popular trainer landed her first Group 1 victory as Apache Chase proved too tough for his rivals in the Kingsford Smith Cup. Now the $8 favourite for next month’s Stradbroke, it seems all of Queensland will get behind the brave frontrunner.

Can we get a market on how many hugs Des will get if her horse wins the Straddie?

It’s clear her instructions to Jimmy Byrne worked, though. “Don’t go slow,” she said, and run them into the ground he did. We might’ve had something on too, so the win was 10 times as good.
