Punt Drunk: Another day, another shitstorm in Australian racing

Punt Drunk racing news – 17/2/21

Happy hump day, punters, and welcome to what is an especially juicy edition of #PuntDrunk.

It’s been a strange old 24 hours since we last convened, including a story that has grabbed the racing world by its balls. We’ll get through that and let you know how we feel about the Blue Diamond barrier draw and what it means for our girl Enthaar.

Let’s crack on, shall we?

Breeding scandal rocks Australian racing

Sean Buckley

Just when we thought the racing world was setting a good example on how to get through any issue, such as continuing through a pandemic that has interrupted most other facets of life, something else jumps up and steals the headlines. This time, it is on the breeding side of things.

According to a report in The Age, Ultra Thoroughbreds have had allegations made against them regarding supposed embryo transplantation among their highly prized mares. According to those that should know, embryo transplantation is forbidden in the racehorse breeding industry and any progeny would be barred from racing.

Sean Buckley, the mega-rich owner of the Ultra Tune car mechanic mob and chief executive of Ultra Thoroughbreds, has leapt on the back foot pretty quickly, suggesting the claims have been made by a disgruntled former employer who he is currently in a Supreme Court action against.

The allegations are still quite raw, but if they do prove to be accurate, then the uproar and backlash will be immense. Ultra Thoroughbreds have had their fair share of champions over the years, and no doubt Racing Victoria will want to get to the bottom of this as soon as possible.

Stuff the wide barrier, we are still chips in!

Enthaar

This season’s two-year-olds are something special, and Enthaar looks the best of the bunch. Despite drawing barrier 14 of 16 for Saturday’s Blue Diamond Stakes, the Maher & Eustace filly is rock solid as a $2.30 favourite with online bookmakers.

With Bivouac failing to get the job done for us last weekend, we have had to launch into some of the reserve to build a bank up for our Enthaar fund. While she is no moral, her first two starts have shown she is a star on the rise. She shat it in to win both the Gimcrack and the Chairman’s Stakes, and now it’s time for her first Group 1 triumph. Is it Saturday yet?

Punt Drunk’s best bet of the day

When Mick Huxtable and in-form apprentice Jessica Eaton combine, they strike at a win rate of over 50%. Master Of Zerprise won over the Strathalbyn 2050m three runs back, and the run he maps to get today is almost a carbon copy of that. He should take a sit just off the leader’s heels and then scoot on by when asked for an effort, giving his rivals windburn in the process.

StrathalbynRace 5 – Master Of Zerprise (#2) $2.50 with Sportsbet
