Ipswich horse betting tips – Wednesday, February 17

Ipswich will play host to seven races on Wednesday before we head back to Doomben on Thursday. The track is currently a Good 4, but there has been rain around and there is more forecasted on race morning, so expect a downgrade. The rail will be out +10m for the entire circumference, so we may see it play favourably to those on speed. The first field is due to face the starter at 2:13pm AEST.

Best Bet: Hail Manhattan

Peter & Will Hulbert combine with Michael Rodd and their in-form Hail Manhattan in a 1710m Class 4 Plate. The last-start Doomben winner had been knocking on the door with two runner-up performances before getting the job done last time out over 1615m. The four-year-old has shown his versatility this time in, evolving from a sprinter into a horse that does his best racing out over further. He shouldn’t be too far away in the run from barrier three, and he can win again if he gets the favours.

Best BetRace 3 – Hail Manhattan (#1) $2.50 with Sportsbet

Next Best: Firebox

Chris Anderson and James Orman combine again in the last with Firebox, who is shooting for back-to-back wins after proving too good at the Sunshine Coast a fortnight ago. The four-year-old Whittington gelding coasted in by 1.5 lengths and put himself back in the winner’s stall for the first time since April, when he broke through to score his maiden victory at this track by nearly five lengths. He steps back slightly from 1400m to the 1350m journey, but that shouldn’t be an issue if the track has some give in it. He’ll be up there handy and should be too good again.

Next BestRace 7 – Firebox (#3) $3.20 with Sportsbet

Best Value: Purple Diamond

Purple Diamond was a clear standout in the yard at her latest run at Doomben and ran well as a $71 shot. She raced in restricted room and then couldn’t quite sprint with them late but still closed off well enough for seventh only 4.5 lengths behind Hey Big Splenda, who came out of the form-heavy Magic Millions Maiden. The Written Tycoon filly has drawn out in barrier nine, but she will get back again under Luke Tarrant if her last run is anything to go by. Up to 1200m will suit her, and the sting out of the ground should be favourable as well. This is her chance in an easier race.

Best ValueRace 4 – Purple Diamond (#8) $6 with Sportsbet
