Sandown Hillside Betting Preview – February 17, 2021
The Hillside track at Sandown will host an eight-part card on Wednesday afternoon as the twilight racing season continues. There looks to be plenty of depth across the meeting with a number of Saturday-quality runners going around. The track is rated a Good 4 with an expected upgrade to a Good 3 early in the card. The rail is out 9m, and history shows it is no disadvantage to be up on speed throughout the meeting. The first race at Sandown is set to jump at 3:40pm AEDT.
Best Bet: Lightsaber
We are happy to be with the two-year-old colt from Peter Moody’s stable, Lightsaber. It was a tough win on February 3 over the Sandown 1300m, not usually seen this early on in a horse’s career. Having been trapped three wide without cover up on speed, Lightsaber seemingly should have been left vulnerable over the concluding stages yet still had enough left in the tank to hold out his rivals. From barrier three he should have no issues finding a position just off the leaders early on, and with the in-form Dean Yendall in the saddle again, the pair look hard to hold out early in the Sandown card.

Next Best: Heart Of Puissance
A year ago Heart Of Puissance was being aimed toward the All Star Mile. Fast forward 12 months and he is competing in a midweek BM70. His first-up run to finish nearly three lengths behind the in-form Regardsmaree on January 26 was better than it looks on paper. He steps up to the mile, where he has won second up in the past, and will appreciate the long home straight of the Hillside course. From barrier six we expect John Allen to settle the stallion towards the rear of the field, and a slick turn of foot will see Heart Of Puissance savage the line.

Best Value: Imperial Lad
John Maloney’a Imperial Lad attempted a snatch-and-grab job at Caulfield last time out on February 6 but could do no better than third place behind Regardsmaree. Although beaten by a fair margin that day, the handy Mystery Shot was only half a length away in second. The gelding is expected to go forward from gate eight, and with only 55.5kg on his back thanks to Teo Nugent’s claim, he will prove hard to catch.
