Racing Victoria (RV) has today released the order of entry for $8 million Melbourne Cup (3200m) to be raced on November 1.

The Robert Hickmott-trained, Lloyd Williams-owned Point Nepean sits atop the Order of Entry for the 162nd Melbourne Cup at Flemington, courtesy of his win in May’s ballot exempt The Andrew Ramsden (2800m).

English St Leger winner Eldar Eldarov (2nd), 2021 Melbourne Cup third place-getter Spanish Mission (3rd), UK-trained pre-post favourite Deauville Legend (4th), and Gold Trip round out the top five in the Order of Entry.

The latter is one of three entrants from the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace stable perched inside the top 24 along with last year’s Caulfield Cup third place-getter Persan (18th) and The Bart Cummings winner Grand Promenade (22nd).

The 2019 Melbourne Cup winner Vow And Declare (62nd) is one of several high profile horses, including Numerian (57th) and Inspirational Girl (58th), that are yet to pass the first ballot clause, but can jump straight into the top 24 should they do so.

Horses can satisfy the Melbourne Cup ballot clause by finishing in the top three in a Group race of 2300m or further; winning a Listed race of 2300m or further; finishing in the top eight in the Caulfield Cup; top five in the Metropolitan Stakes; top three in the Cox Plate (2040m) at The Valley on October 22; or by winning the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 1.

Second acceptances for the Melbourne Cup close at 12 noon (AET) on Tuesday, September 27.
