- Tom Sherry and Brad Widdup combined for a winner to end the day at Randwick, with Phearson ($12.00) proving far too strong in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m). The son of Exosphere showed his potentail at the end of his previous campaign, securing victory in the Group 3 Festival Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill before being sent to the paddock after a lacklustre performance in the Group 2 Ingham (1600m). The pace was on early as Phearson pinged the lids under Tom Sherry, however, he didn’t get it his own way on speed, with Coal Crusher ($3.60) and Whinchat ($4.00) both looking to cross from the wider draws. They couldn’t respond the way Phearson did when the whips were cracking.
- Joseph Pride unearthed a very impressive type in the spring of 2023, as Think About It continued blasting through the grades with a Group 3 win in the Liverpool City Cup. It was a dominant front-running effort from Sam Clipperton to pinch some cheap sectionals mid-race and utilising the low weight for the lightly raced four-year-old out of So You Think. It’s was an impressive rise throughout the preparation when starting his campaign in January to score at BM72 grade and could be looking for bigger and better things after his Group 3 triumph. From the jump it was a comfortable watch for favourite backers as Clipperton was able to keep luck out of the equation and kick clear to score for a comfortable 1.7 length win.
- The market had the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup down to a race in two between Ellsberg ($2.60) and Atishu ($3.90) at Randwick on Saturday, and after Atishu refused to take part in the race, Ellsberg backers never looked in doubt. It was a vintage Tim Clark ride aboard the Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained entire, guiding the galloper to a dominant all-the-way victory. Despite all four of the earlier winners on the day coming down the centre of the straight, Clark kept the race favourite hard against the running rail, proving that there was nothing wrong with that part of the track as he extended and cleared away in the 1300m race.
