Homesman digs deep for music legend Michael Gudinksi | Punt Drunk

Punt Drunk Daily – 7/3/21

Good morning punters, and welcome back to another edition of Punt Drunk. The one place we can all come together and moan about how much September Run should have won by. But we aren’t going to do that! We are going to saddle up, dig deep and push through the pain and wrap up the day that was around the country.

The Music Man dances the night away

How bloody fitting was it that Homesman got his nose down on the line in front of any other runner in the Australian Cup? When music icon Michael Gudinksi passed away during the week, it is safe to say everyone in Australia felt for the family, and felt a little empty. Well Gudinski had a lasting affect on the 2021 Australian Cup. He part owned Homesman and in a fantastic call from Matt Hill where he paid tribute to the fact that Homesman had an important fan upstairs, it was Homesman who surprised plenty of punters with a win in the Australian Cup. Edging out Best Of Days in a riveting battle over the concluding stages of the Cup. Also, Jye McNeil, what a 6 month spell at Flemington he is having!

Two stars flop and another gets pipped on the line

There was plenty left to the imagination at about 6pm last night. We had a shit time of it in the Newmarket Handicap, when September Run went around like a busted arse and never really looked in it. Bivouac was out gunned by his stablemate Savatiano in the Canterbury Stakes, but we weren’t complaining too hard and we hope you guys followed us in on Savatiano. On top of both of that, Nature Strip was pipped on the line by a bee’s apendage in a result that saw Eduardo set a new track record for the Randwick 1000m when he nabbed the $1.85 favourite. Days like that on that punt are referred to as characters building, we just call it shit.

Cult figures salute

Lightsaber made it three in a row when taking out the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes at Flemington and up in QLD at Eagle Farm The Stiffmeister got his nose out just in time to break through for his maiden. Now we all know a casual punter who’s a Star Ward fan who would have loved the win by Lightsaber. Plus if you don’t like American Pie and you weren’t up and about for the win by The Stiffmeister, you can get get in the bin! Runners like these two will get more people interested in the sport, purely for just the name, but they both look set for fantastic careers and they are already a couple of our favourites!

Punt Drunk’s best bet of the day

It’s a Sunday afternoon on the punt, and flip of the coin odds are available for Regardsmaree in the Echuca Cup? Yes please. The Nick Ryan star is pushing for his fourth win in a row and with the step back to country level should be winning this with a leg up in the air! We are chips in.
