Canberra race betting preview – March 07, 2021
Eight races will be run and won at Canberra on Sunday afternoon, with their feature race being the seventh, the Black Opal. The track is rated a Good 4, and the rail is out +3m for the entire circumference of the course. Race 1 is set to jump at 1:20pm.
Best Bet: Flat Heaven
Bjorn Baker’s import Flat Heaven was an absolute horror watch in his first Australian start when sixth behind Emanate a fortnight ago. The six-year-old has won just four of his fourteen starts, and is well travelled having raced in both France and Hong Kong and now calls Australia home. He was restrained back to last immediately after jumping last start, and Clark, who retains the ride nearly came off in the straight when he was poleaxed by a runner on his inside, before racing in restricted room for the rest of the way home. He has drawn wide again in barrier 11, but there is plenty of speed engaged, with a number of these runners coming through the same race. He can make it win five in country number three.

Next Best: Quiet Riot
Another for the Baker yard is odds on elect, Quiet Riot in the opener. The son of Fastnet Rock won his maiden at Warwick Farm, before finishing only 1.5L off Best Stone and 1L off Valdostana in a high rating race. This is his first start for a little over 12 months, but he has trialled twice in preparation for this which should have him forward enough. Drawn gate four over the 1200m for Jason Collett, he should dictate terms and prove too good for what looks an average lot. He is well in at the weights and looks to have plenty of ability, so we expect him to justify his odds on quote.

Best Value: Spicy Restaurant
Spicy Restaurant has not had a start for 37 weeks, but brings some genuine form lines to the fore. The three-year-old gelding has had eight starts for just the two second placings, but he has finished 6L off Group 1-placed colt Wild Ruler, 3L off Barbaric in last year’s edition of the Black Opal, 6L off the talented The Bopper and 2L off The Actuary at Doomben in the Listed The Phoenix at his most recent start. He has drawn the outside alley and been allocated the top weight of 59.5kg for his troubles, but he faces a massive class drop and should come in four gates after emergencies come out. If he has come back in good order, he should make his presence felt, just like a spicy restaurant should.
