The Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) is the headline act at Rosehill on Saturday afternoon, with a quality field of 11 three-year-olds set to do battle for the $1 million prize. The James Cummings-trained Traffic Warden proved too strong in the traditional lead-up, claiming victory in the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m) on September 14. Can he be the first galloper to do the double since fellow Godolphin runner Bivouac achieved the feat in 2019? Or will it be stable companion and two-time Group 1 winner Broadsiding returning to capture more Group 1 glory?
2024 Golden Rose odds
Despite being first-up into the 2024 Golden Rose, horse racing bookmakers wasted no time installing Broadsiding as the clear $2.80 favourite for the three-year-old feature. Traffic Warden ($4.20) is on the second line of betting after claiming the Run To The Rose a fortnight ago, while Storm Boy ($4.60) is solid in the market in an attempt to turn the tables. Linebacker ($8.00) has admirers after an eye-catching first-up performance, while double-figure odds is available about the remaining runners, including Anode ($13.00) and Emirate ($15.00), with the pair receiving some specking.
2024 Golden Rose speed map
This year’s edition of the Golden Rose should be a genuinely run affair, with Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained trio Storm Boy (11), Anode (10) and Mayfair (5) all showing early speed in the past. James McDonald will look to be positive from the inside draw (1) aboard Broadsiding to gain the back of the leaders, while Fearless (2) should get every opportunity to lob into the one-one under Tommy Berry. Linebacker (7) should land mid-field with cover, while Traffic Warden and Ben Melham may retreat towards the rear from gate nine. With a strong tempo throughout, every runner should get there chance.

Golden Rose 2024 preview & form
The John O’Shea & Tom Charlton-trained Linebacker couldn’t have given a better Golden Rose audition than what he produced first-up in the Run To The Rose on September 14, closing off with the best final 600m sectionals of the entire meeting. The son of Super Seth was bouncing off a 21-week spell and an autumn campaign which included a Group 1 runner-up placing behind Broadsiding in the Champagne Stakes (1600m), where he was beaten less than a length at start three. He beat Broadsiding at this course and distance last preparation to boot, and although he may need some luck jumping from stall seven, the $8.00 about Linebacker is simply too big.
Storm Boy is beginning to make a nasty habit of missing the start, but if he can jump with them, the Justify colt must be considered a major player. Adam Hyeronimus will have no choice but to burn the candle at both ends as he bounds across from barrier 11, and although he may be slowing at the end of 1400m, Storm Boy could do enough to repay the hefty Coolmore price tag.
History is against Broadsiding as he attempts to win the Golden Rose first-up, but the Godolphin colt may prove classy enough to get the job done. He was flying at a recent barrier trial at Hawkesbury on September 17, and he gets every opportunity to make an impression from barrier one; however, at the price, punters can be willing to take a set against this ultra-talented three-year-old.
Traffic Warden has serious claims but will have it all to do from barrier nine. Ben Melham will need to weave a passage at some stage, and if the gaps appear, watch for the Run To The Rose winner to be flashing home and beating them all.
