A bumper 10-race card is set to be run and won at Doomben this Saturday, provided that the track dries out. After losing the Doomben Cup meeting earlier in the year, three races from that program – Listed Darby McCarthy, Listed Chief De Beers & Group 3 Pam O’Neill Stakes – have been added to Saturday’s card, extending the Brisbane Winter Carnival another week to some degree. HorseBetting’s Queensland racing analyst presents you with his best bet in the three feature events, as well as his best bets and quaddie numbers for the remainder of the card. The track is currently a Heavy 10 and the rail is out 0.5m for the entire course. The first of 10 is scheduled for 11:08am AEST.
Darby McCarthy Best Bet – Uncommon James
It is hard not to love what Uncommon James has been doing at the races in his short career, so it was ultra-pleasing to see him return with a dominant win a fortnight ago at Eagle Farm. The Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted-trained three-year-old has won three of his four starts, including a Listed Oxlade Stakes as a two-year-old, so he will be looking to add another Listed win next to his already-impressive CV. The gelded son of Cable Bay does come back to 1110m after winning by two and a half lengths first-up over 1200m, but the wet track should make this feel like a bit more of a six-furlong affair. Brodie Loy replaced Ben Thompson in the saddle, with Thompson on his honeymoon with fellow jockey Stephanie Thornton, but Loy has settled into Queensland very well, having already picked up a Listed win aboard Holyfield in the Eye Liner Stakes. Uncommon James should be too good once again.

Chief De Beers Best Bet – Contemptuous
Here’s hoping the O’Dea & Hoysted stable are on song, because our wallets are depending on them. We are big fans of Contemptuous and he looks really well suited to this race on Saturday. The son of Rubick just doesn’t know how to run a bad race as his record suggests (13:7-1-3), so we are expecting him to bounce back after a fourth placing last start. That fourth came in the Listed Lightning Stakes at Eagle Farm on June 4 over 1000m behind Boomnova and Garibaldi, so we certainly don’t think there is anything wrong with being beaten just over two lengths by that pair. In three rides aboard Contemptuous, Jaden Lloyd is yet to lose a race on him, so we are pleased to see the young apprentice back in the saddle for Saturday’s assignment. He will be nice and fresh for the 1110m dash and he should be right in the finish once again.

Pam O’Neill Stakes Best Bet – She’s The Gift
She’s The Gift may only be coming out of a midweek Benchmark 85 win at Doomben, but we are happy to be with her in this Group 3 feature. The Chris Waller-trained four-year-old led all of the way on that occasion to win from a fast-finishing Adelase over 1640m on June 1, so with a bit of a freshen, we are confident she can do it again. The win was backed up by the clock too, as they ran well over a second faster than the Class 5 Plate on the same day, while the form has been strong since. Out of that race, we have seen Seleque come out and win again, Fast Talking win consecutive metropolitan races and most impressively, Palaisipan win a Group 2 and then run third in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara. This daughter of Power is likely to lead from barrier four under Lee Magorrian on Saturday and really give them something to catch at healthy odds.

Best Bet at Doomben – Goldsborough
Goldsborough proved the heavy track was no problem on Saturday at the Sunshine Coast, pulling away the last little bit in a 1000m Benchmark 90 to win by a length. That was just the second run back from a long break for the Gary Duncan-trained four-year-old, so he should take plenty of improvement out of it. First-up, he was beaten narrowly by The Big Goodbye, who meets him 3.5kg worse at the weights, so Goldsborough looks to hold the key there, while the likes of Garibaldi and Mass Destruction will want it drier. We added Safework into our blackbook following a good first-up run behind Uncommon James, so it will be interesting to see how he goes here on an unsuitable surface also.

Next Best at Doomben – Excelman
We were keen on Excelman’s chances at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday, but it was probably a wise move to scratch from the final race of the day given how the track was. While it might not be any different in the last race on Saturday, it is arguably a more suitable race for the Richard Laming-trained grey. The five-year-old son of Reliable Man has an imposing first-up record, having won two of his five fresh runs, including a win at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day last year. He has won two races on soft ground which is an advantage, and he has won at this distance (1400m) fresh before too. From the wide barrier, Tegan Harrison is likely to look for a forward position and give them something to catch on a track which often suits leaders. If he runs as well as he trialled, he will be very hard to beat in this.

Best Value at Doomben – Betterdeel
Rockhampton trainer Clinton Taylor has accepted with two horses at Doomben on Saturday, The Egyptian and Betterdeel. While both are winning chances, we are confident that Betterdeel has flown under the radar a bit in the two-year-old race. The filly by Better Than Ready has had two trips to Brisbane in her five-start career, which has seen her finish fourth to Exo Lady at Listed level back in December. Upon resumption at Rockhampton on May 27, she chased hard on a leaderish track to run third behind Tequila Dancer over 1200m, before bumping into a smart gelding by the name of Better Rain at Rockhampton on June 24. She gets in reasonably well at the weights on Saturday with 55kg and gets the services of Samantha Collett who is riding well. She can be covered up from the get-go from barrier three and have the final say. The wet track is a query, but that is the case with most of these.
