Notable winners of the Chelmsford Stakes include Think It Over (2021), Unforgotten (2018), Winx (2017), Hartnell (2016), Hawkspur (2013/2014), Danleigh (2012), Lonhro (2002 & 2003), Might And Power (1998), Emancipation (1983), Kingston Town (1980 & 1981), Ming Dynasty (1978), Gunsynd (1970), Roman Consul (1967-1969), Tulloch (1960), Prince Darius (1957/1958), Delta (1950-1952), Bernborough (1946), Rogilla (1933 & 1934), Phar Lap (1930), Limerick (1926-1928), Heroic (1924) and Gloaming (1918).
Despite not being a Group 1 race, the Chelmsford Stakes is often won by Group 1 calibre horses.

Recent Chelmsford Stakes winners
- Chris Waller and Tommy Berry combined with Buckaroo ($8.00) to win the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Randwick, fighting out the finish with stable companion Hinged ($5.00) to pick up his first Australian success. The writing was on the wall after a strong first-up performance in the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) on August 24, where the son of Fastnet Rock closed within 3.5 lengths of Via Sistina. The well-supported favourite Zardozi ($2.40) came through the same form-line and was given every opportunity to make an impression second-up, slotting into a midfield stalking position throughout under James McDonald. Tommy Berry was positive on the eventual winner, however, bounding across to sit on the hammer of the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Just Fine ($8.50) in the early portion of the race before persuading the five-year-old to give a bold kick at the top of the straight. Buckaroo gave them the slip with 300m left to travel, with Hinged the only one making any impression as Nash Rawiller went searching for back-to-back features after claiming the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) the race prior. It was a ding-dong go on the wire, but it was Buckaroo just getting the verdict in a tight finish to the 2024 Chelmsford Stakes.
- The David Payne-trained Navajo Peak ($51) has caused a massive upset in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Randwick. Having stalked a hot speed set by Lindermann ($14) and Knights Order ($26), Chad Schofield gave Navajo Peak every chance to cause an upset and he did just that. With Knights Order under pressure on the home turn, Navajo Peak managed to sprint strongly and grabbed Lindermann with 100m to go and managed to hold off the fast-finishing duo of Major Beel ($26) and race favourite Think It Over ($3.30) Saturday’s win in the Chelmsford was Navajo Peak’s first Group win of his career, with connections dreaming big having nominated their horse for the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) for later in the spring.
- The Sydney Cup (3200m) winner Knights Order ($7) resumed in fine fashion at Randwick, when leading all the way in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes, denying a brave Numerian ($5.50). The eight-year-old son of So You Think got an uncontested lead under Tim Clark in the 1600m encounter, and that proved to be the difference at the business end, as Tim Clark booted home his second Group 2 win of the day. Despite never having fired a shot first-up in six previous attempts, Knights Order enjoyed the Heavy 10 test in his first run for the preparation as a kick off point for a Melbourne Cup campaign.
- Group 1 winner Think It Over ($4.20) put in one hell of a lunge on the winning post to get the better of leader Riodini ($41) in a thrilling edition of the Chelmsford Stakes. Having finished sixth first-up in the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m), the Kerry Parker-trained runner was given a near perfect ride from Nash Rawiller and having experienced a smooth run in transit, Think About It was seemingly always going to pick up Riodini. It took him until the final stride, but Think It Over showed his will-to-win late to get the chocolates.
- Trainer Chris Waller managed to train the first three across the line in the 2020 Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes, with Mister Sea Wolf ($5) holding off Yulong Prince ($21) and Finche ($9). Mister Sea Wolf and Nash Rawiller made a brave and ultimately successful bid to take the race after tracking Wu Gok and Adam Hyeronimus into the main straight. Rawiller had stalked the leader and at the 400m he eased Mister Sea Wolf out off the heels of Wu Gok. Held together until the final 200m, Rawiller asked for the ultimate effort and despite seemingly being there for the taking, Rawiller lifted Mister Sea Wolf to a narrow victory.
- Having caused a massive upset in the Group 1 Winx Stakes, Bjorn Baker’s Samadoubt proved it was no fluke when thrashing his rivals in the Chelmsford Stakes. Having saluted in the Group 1 at $41, bookies were not as generous in the Chelmsford, but still proved his $10 to be incorrect. The natural front-runner managed to cross to the front of the field from barrier 14 to lead throughout and put a remarkable 3.3 lengths on race favourite Avilius ($2), with Girl Tuesday ($5) a further nose away in third. Clark’s initiative to cross from the wide barrier proved to be the difference, with an uncontested lead crucial to Samadoubt’s success.
