The Group 3 Chatham Stakes, currently run as the Rising Fast Stakes, is a Group 3 Handicap event held at Flemington over 1200m.
First run in 1978 and won be Sarsha’s Choice, the Chatham Stakes was originally run over 1600m, then was brought back to the 1400m from 1986 onwards.
In 2022, the decision was made to make the Chatham Stakes a 1200m sprint.
Named after the champion horse Chatham, who won multiple times in the Cox Plate, Epsom Handicap and Doncaster Mile, the race was renamed as The Rising Fast with its move back to a sprinting distance.
Worth $200,000, the Chatham Stakes is often used as a lead up run for those horses looking to go around in the Group 1 Champions Mile on the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

- After going down as a well-backed favourite last start, Spacewalk ($5.00) returned to the winner’s circle with a strong win in the Group 3 Rising Fast Stakes down the Flemington straight, with Jamie Kah giving him a perfectly timed ride. The James Cummings-trained sprinter settled a lot closer to the speed, albeit five lengths off the tearaway leader Najeem Suhail ($10.00) who ran the race at a breakneck tempo. When the leader began to slow and take smaller steps, Kah went for her mount and as he lengthened stride, he picked up the leader very quickly and went past him. However, it wasn’t all easy for the winner, as Crosshaven ($31.00) flashed through the pack and nearly snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, but Spacewalk had enough of a margin on the runner-up to hold on and claim victory.
- Damien Oliver and Anthony & Sam Freedman combined to win the 2022 Group 3 Rising Fast Stakes over 1200m with Argentia proving too good down the Flemington straight. Argentia held a nomination in the Empire Rose Stakes and the Rising Fast Stakes and the team chose to the 1200m event over the 1600m event and it paid dividends with their classy four-year-old mare winning in style. After drifting out to $9.50 with online bookmakers, Argentia sat behind the leaders, The Astrologist and Generation, before peeling off their backs with 300m to go to win by half a length over the fast finishing Triple Missile
- Having not tasted success in over two years, Age Of Chivalry broke a run of outs in the 2021 Chatham Stakes. Sent around as a $10 chance for the Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra barn, Damian Lane had his mount settled outside leader Morvada upon settling. Age Of Chivalry was clearly travelling the better entering the home turn and when asked to quicken, Age Of Chivalry kept fighting to hold off the challenges of Crosshaven throughout the final 200m.
- Last start Moonee Valley winner Sansom was always going to take some beating and managed to lead throughout the Group 3 Chatham Stakes to just fend off his rivals in a blanket finish. Gifted the lead by Morvada, Ben Allen was able to dictate terms upon settling at an even tempo. Allen cuddled Sansom for as long a she could an despite being there to be beaten, Sansom kept finding to fend off Morvada in a strong front-running display.
