Behemoth wins back-to-back Memsie Stakes

Adelaide gelding Behemoth has scored his second straight win in the Group One Memsie Stakes at Caulfield.

Behemoth became the first horse since Sunline in 2000-2001 to claim consecutive wins in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) when claiming the 2021 Memsie in impressive fashion.

Needing to lug 60kg, the David Jolly-trained gelding was given a peach of a ride from replacement jockey Brett Prebble, who just 36 hours prior wasn’t even the listed jockey aboard the multiple Group 1 winner.

Following the infamous AirBnB party at Mornington which saw five jockeys suspended for breaking lockdown protocols, including Jamie Kah who had been tasked with Behemoth’s quest. Prebble was called upon to help Behemoth create Memsie Stakes history after Kah was suspended.

Having begun with the field from barrier 10, Prebble looked like he was able to get cover in the moving line during the middle stages of the race; but when the opportunity presented to pocket market rival Tofane – Prebble leapt at it. Desspite travelling three wide with no cover for the last 700m, it was Behemoth who walked away with the first Group 1 of the Victorian racing season.

The six-year-old All Too Hard gelding was given a late fright when fellow South Australian Beau Rossa was making his run and looked to be the one with momentum heading to the line.

However, as was the case in the Group 3 Spring Stakes at Morphettville on August 14, it was Behemoth who walked away with the spoils and his third Group 1 success.

With the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes on September 18 at Caulfield, it is expected Behemoth will defend his title and is a $6.50 chance to do so. He is currently on the second line of betting to take out the Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington on September 4.
