The Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint is shaping to be one of the highlights of the afternoon at Royal Randwick this Saturday with the likes of Wild Ruler, Rocketing By, Aim, September Run and Isotope all engaged. There will be speed early from Wisdom Of Water and The Face, while we should also expect to see Wild Ruler, Dame Giselle and Isotope handy. The sole Group 1 winner in the field, September Run, is the current $3.50 favourite, but she is very easy, while Queensland filly Isotope has firmed from $4.80 into $3.80 second favourite.

After Isotope put the field away nicely in the Darby Munro Stakes in her Sydney debut, we have no reason to be against her. The Tony Gollan-trained filly has done everything he asks of her to date, with her only two blemishes coming at 1400m in her two-year-old season and when she lost the rider in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas. Ryan Maloney steered the Deep Field filly to perfection in the Darby Munro at Rosehill on March 27, coming back to the inside to beat home Thousands Guineas winner Odeum in a nail biter. Drawn in barrier three on Saturday, Isotope will get a near-perfect run and should be too good for them. This is her acid test, but gee, she is good.

September Run is the obvious danger in the race. We were semi-keen on her in the TJ Smith Stakes last Saturday before she was scratched due to the deteriorating track, so racing on a Soft 5 and even potentially a Good 4 will make her hard to beat. The Chris Waller-trained filly was too good for some of her rivals here in the Coolmore Stud Stakes over the Flemington Carnival last spring, and her slashing fourth in the William Reid Stakes was very good from the back of the field. Craig Williams knows this horse well, but they have drawn awkwardly on the inside given her get-back-and-run-on racing pattern. She is the class.

We are big fans of Peter & Paul Snowden’s colt Wild Ruler, so we have to make a case for him in this. The son of Snitzel was a brilliant first-up winner at this track over the 1100m and then just floundered late in The Galaxy behind Eduardo when sixth. Back against his own age and up to 1200m is going to suit. The colt is undefeated at Randwick from three starts, which will give connections plenty of confidence ahead of Saturday’s Group 2. James McDonald will put him into the race from barrier 10, and he should be hard to get past.
