Prize Money: | $750,000 |

The Zipping Classic is a Group 2 race that is held at Caulfield Racecourse and is run under weight for age conditions for stayers, boasting a prize pool of $750,000.
Since the inaugural running in 1888, the race has had four different names; Williamstown Cup (1888-1962), Sandown Cup (1963-1998), Sandown Classic (1999-2010) and Zipping Classic (2011 onwards).
Although the race distance has changed a few times, the Zipping Classic has been run over 2200m or further but since 1972 the race has stayed at the 2400m distance.
The race was named after the war horse Zipping, who won four editions of the race from 2007 to 2010, with three of those wins coming after Melbourne Cup tilts.
Notable winners of the Zipping Classic include Vow And Declare (2022), Sound (2021 & 2020), The Taj Mahal (2018 & 2017), Zipping (2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010), Roman Arch (2005), Sky Heights (2001), Count Chivas (1995), Our Pompeii (1994), Arwon (1980), Gunsynd (1971), Light Fingers (1966), Shadow King (1933) and Amounis (1928).

Recent Zipping Classic results
- Bjorn Baker and Rachel King have combined with seasoned stayer Arapaho to take out the feature Group 2 Zipping Classic. Following his strong fifth-place finish behind Via Sistina in the Group 1 VRC Champions Stakes, horse racing bookmakers opened the son of Lope De Vega as the favourite for the race, a mark that he held throughout betting before jumping as the $4.40 market elect. As expected, Smokin’ Romans ($13) and Serpentine ($21) took up the lead, turning out of the straight for the first time, with roughie Star Of India ($101) settling behind the leading duo. The three market fancies, Kingswood ($5.50), Arapaho and Naval College ($6), found perfect positions midfield and enjoyed a solid tempo throughout the 2400m journey. Very little changed down the back straight and down the side before Smokin’ Romans lifted the speed, which left his leading partner flatfooted and a few others came off the bit back in the field. However, King was sitting quietly on the eventual winner as she worked off the fence and tracked up nicely to challenge the leader at the 300m mark. With nothing else running on from the back of the field, Arapaho and Smokin’ Romans settled down to battle it out in the final 150m, with the former getting the better of the game leader, pulling clear late to claim victory by just under a length.
- Military Mission ($12.00) has kept the strong record of Melbourne Cup runners winning the Group 2 Zipping Classic, as the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained stayer took out the feature race at Caulfield after running 10th in the race that stops the nation at his last start. After taking out the Zipping Classic, the five-year-old gelding became the sixth runner in the last 10 years to win the $750,000 race after running in the Melbourne Cup. The son of Mastercraftsman was a track and trip winner in the Herbert Power Stakes two starts back and he won in very similar fashion, running on from the back of the field to outstay his rivals in the concluding stages. Deny Knowledge ($5.00) led the field from Duke De Sessa ($3.50) and the race didn’t change much but when the sprint went on, the leader started to struggle at the 400m mark and Duke De Sessa took over and kicked clear at the top of the straight. Behind him was a wall of horses, with the race favourite Muramasa ($3.40) and Amade ($21.00) making their runs on the outside; however, it would be Military Mission who would run straight past them with 300m to go and past the slowing leader with 150m to go. Bankers Choice ($8.50) ran home strong along the inside rail to nab second, but there was no doubt about the winner as he recorded a 2.75-length victory.
- Vow And Declare (+400) finally broke through to win his first race of the spring in the 2022 Group 2 Zipping Classic. John Allen and Danny O’Brien combined at Caulfield to get a much-deserved win in the 2400m feature race of the day. Luncies (+230) appeared to raise a challenge at the 200m mark, but he couldn’t run down the winner, as Persan (+450) stayed on for third place.
- Sound (+1900) has gone back-to-back in the Group 2 Zipping Classic as he charged home from midfield to claim Dr Drill (+2500) in the final 50m and run away with a dominant win. The Michael Moroney-trained stayer became just the third horse to win multiple Zipping Classics, emulating the effort of The Taj Mahal who went back-to-back three years prior. After leading the field up, Dr Drill held on for second and Wentwood (+3000) battled away on the inside to claim third.
- Jamie Kah produced one of the spring’s best judged rides to partner Sound (+400) to his first win in Australia in the Group 2 Zipping Classic. At his 19th start in Australia, the Michael Moroney-trained import finally broke through for his first win on Aussie soil. After settling worse than midfield until the halfway mark, Kah chose to take off and settle outside the leader. By the 200m mark, Sound kicked clear to put a length on her rivals and was able to hold on from the fast-finishing Brimham Rocks (+500) and Future Score (+500), who finished in second and third, respectively.
- Southern France (+200) backed up from a underwhelming performace in the Melbourne Cup and produce a devastating finish to run straight past his rivals in the Group 2 Zipping Classic. The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained import settled last in the 2400m contest and was still in last place at the 400m mark, before he charged home down the outside to pick up his rivals within 300m and draw clear. Miss Siska (+900) and Chapada (+1800) fought out the minor placings, with the former getting the nod in a close photo for second place.
