The 33rd Tattersall’s Tiara will be run and won as the sole Group 1 race of the day at Eagle Farm this Saturday afternoon. Even though it isn’t one of the more high-profile races in Australia, the weight-for-age feature is still one of the key targets for trainers and owners with middle-distance fillies and mares. The 2023 edition of the race has drawn a full field of 17 runners, with three fillies taking on the older mares.

Tattersall’s Tiara 2023 betting odds

Two of the three fillies head the market with most online bookmakers. The Luke Pepper-trained Opal Ridge has opened as the $3.30 favourite and is closely followed by Ruthless Dame at $5. There is only one other runner under double figures, and that is Chaillot at $9. Chain Of Lightning ($11), Foxy Frida ($12) and Comrade Rosa ($14) round out the top six in the betting, with plenty of value to be found outside of the top two in the market.

Tattersall’s Tiara 2023 speed map

There appear to be a few speed influences in this year’s running of the Tatts Tiara, with the likes of Electric Girl, Mirra Vision, Lady Of Honour and Charmebaby all expected to push forward. With those four battling over the lead, Comrade Rosa, Opal Ridge and Chain Of Lightning should be able to settle in behind them from inside barriers. Out the back we will see Ruthless Dame, Chaillot, Roots and Foxy Frida, who will be hoping for a solid enough tempo so they can run on down the outside in the final 300m.

Tattersall’s Tiara 2023 preview & form

The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Ruthless Dame is the only runner in this field that has won at Group 1 level, having taken out the Robert Sangster Stakes at Morphettville. This three-year-old filly also went within a nostril of winning the Surround Stakes during The Championships in Sydney, while each of her last four starts have been at Group 1 level. In the Stradbroke Handicap last start, this daughter of Tavistock settled in an awkward position third last on the rail before running up the inside to finish fifth, only 2.6 lengths off Think About It. Now that she drops back to a race against her own sex, Ruthless Dame and John Allen appear to be a very strong chance of combining for their second Group 1 win in three starts.

After winning the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes at Eagle Farm last start, Comrade Rosa must go into our top two. Since moving to Queensland and going under the care of Tony Gollan, this four-year-old mare has won four out of six races and not once missed the placings. Although this daughter of Capitalist hasn’t competed at Group 1 level yet, she defeated a few of her main Tatts Tiara rivals last start. If Ryan Maloney can give her a similar ride to what he did in the Dane Ripper, expect Comrade Rosa to run well again and challenge the top few.

Opal Ridge was massive in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes last start, where she finished second behind Comrade Rosa after settling four wide for the entire 1300m trip. Most online betting sites have this three-year-old filly as their clear favourite; however, her last race will have taken a lot out of her at the end of a three-month preparation, and the rise to Group 1 level only raises the degree of difficulty.

Foxy Friday is coming off back-to-back wins, with the second of those coming in the Fillies & Mares National Classic over 1600m at Eagle Farm. This time in, the daughter of Foxwedge hasn’t finished outside the top two, including a win in the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes and a second-place finish in the Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes. However, dropping back from 1600m to 1400m and drawing barrier 20 are major concerns.
