Recent Shannon Stakes winners
- Bjorn Baker and Tyler Schiller combined with Amor Victorious ($8.50) to claim victory in the Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill, stamping his authority for a possible tilt towards the Five Diamonds (1800m). It was a front-running masterclass by Schiller taking all luck out of the equation, sliding forward to lead throughout from barrier five. No one wanted to take on the son of Caravaggio for the early lead, allowing Schiller to dictate terms in the middle stages, and although there was some pressure by the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Bases Loaded ($4.40), the five-year-old responded well under the urgings of Schiller. Punch Lane ($15.00), New Endeavour ($26.00) and Osipenko were finishing off well, while the short-priced favourite Celestial Legend ($3.80) was a shade disappointing after missing the start.
- Following an inch-perfect steer from Nash Rawiller, the Matthew Dunn-trained Cepheus managed to claim the Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill. The six-year-old gelding bought up a second win from his last six starts after saluting in the South Grafton Cup on July 9 when securing a spot in The Big Dance (1600m) on Melbourne Cup Day. The son of Sea The Stars was having his 11th start of his campaign, but showed no signs of slowing down when hitting the line strongly under Rawiller. After Cross Talk ($7.50) made it a genuinely run 1500m affair, Rawiller stalked the speed perfectly from barrier two and when asked to quicken, Cepheus ($4.20) managed to sprint the best and hold a decent margin on Williamsburg ($9.50) and Waterford ($3.40) in behind him.
- Surf Dancer (+400) made a winning return to the racetrack by claiming the 2022 Group 2 Shannon Stakes at Rosehill. Online bookmakers marked the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained galloper as the third favourite, behind Ellsberg (+220) and Old Flame (+270). As the race panned out, the three favourites settled in the top four and gave nothing else a chance, as Surf Dancer recorded a dominant win over Old Flame and Ellsberg, who finished in second and third, respectively.
- Under the urgings of veteran jockey Glyn Schofield, Yonkers (+4000) has claimed the Group 2 Shannon Stakes, after being sent around as the roughest runner in the 10-horse field. Discharged (+850) tried to lead all of the way in the 1500m contest, but was nailed right on the post by the winner. Running on from the back of the field, Reloaded (+1600) was made to duck and weave on the inside and finished in third place – only a neck off the top two.
- The money came for I Am Superman (+360) and he duly saluted for his followers, running away to claim an easy 1.3 length victory in the Group 2 Shannon Stakes. After settling outside the leader Quackerjack (+1200), the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained gelding kicked clear at the 300m mark and built a winning margin. Riodini (+380) and Looks Like Elvis (+380) finished in second and third, respectively, after bumping a few times in the home straight.
- The lethal combination of Chris Waller and James McDonald struck again in the Group 2 Shannon Stakes, with Mister Sea Wolf (+850) getting the better of Gem Song (+140) and Tom Melbourne (+1100). After leading for most of the race, Tom Melbourne attempted to kick clear at the top of the home straight, but Mister Sea Wolf got a clear run along the rail and ran straight past the perennial placegetter. Meanwhile, the race favourite Gem Song couldn’t go with the winner and he battled away to finish in second place – beaten by 1.3 lengths.
