What Sandown Hillside Races
Where Sandown Racecourse – 591-659 Princes Hwy, Springvale VIC 3171
When Wednesday, January 17, 2024
First Race 3:40pm AEDT

Racing returns to the Hillside track at Sandown for another Wednesday afternoon meeting, where seven races await punters. Plenty of rain is forecast for the region, so the current Good 4 track rating will most likely deteriorate to a Soft rating prior to race one, with the track likely to chop out as the meeting goes on. The rail comes out 3m the entire circuit, with action set to commence at 3:40pm AEDT.

Best Bet at Sandown: Another Wil

Returning from a near six-month spell, we’re confident the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Another Wil can return as a winner. The four-year-old gelding is yet to finish outside of the top three in his three career runs, with all of those starts coming on rain-affected going as a three-year-old. With a win and a narrow runner-up effort to his name on Heavy 9’s, we have no doubt this son of Street Boss will appreciate the sting out of the ground. Jamie Kah will have this chestnut settled towards the rear of the field despite drawing barrier two. However, Another Wil has the best turn of foot in the race, and he should prove too hard to hold out in the second leg of the quaddie.

Best Bet

Next Best at Sandown: Punch Lane

Punch Lane from the Anthony & Sam Freedman barn is a three-time winner from five starts, and the four-year-old gelding looks poised to add another one here. The So You Think progeny returned from a brief spell to win by 4.5 lengths at Geelong on December 27 to signal his intent for this campaign. With his main rival Lang Park drawn out in barrier 15, Damian Lane will have Punch Lane settled close to the speed throughout and most likely stalk his main rival wherever he goes. With an economical run in transit and armed with a strong turn of foot for BM70 grade, Punch Lane should prove too good for this lot and help send us home a winner.

Next Best

Race 7 – silks#9 Punch Lane (6)

4yo Gelding | T: Anthony & Sam Freedman | J: Damian Lane (60kg)

Best Value at Sandown: Nineveh

Patrick Payne’s Nineveh returned with a handy third-place finish at Moonee Valley on December 8 after a six-month spell, and we think she can return to the winner’s enclosure on Wednesday. The No Nay Never filly settled up on speed, and finished within a long neck of the eventual winner, Our Cracklin Rosie. From barrier four, Laura Lafferty will likely look to hold a spot just off the leaders’ heels, with plenty of speed drawn out wide in this race. As long as Nineveh can absorb the pressure, she looks to be a smart filly in the making, and at a nice price with top horse racing bookmakers, Nineveh can win here.

Best Value

Race 3 – silks#6 Nineveh (4)

3yo Filly | T: Patrick Payne | J: Laura Lafferty (57kg)
