Where Sandown Racecourse – 591-659 Princes Hwy, Springvale VIC 3171
When Sunday, June 1, 2025
First Race 11:50am AEST

Feature racing heads to the Lakeside circuit at Sandown on Sunday afternoon, where the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) headlines proceedings. The $100,000 Australian Steeplechase (3900m) and $100,000 Australian Hurdle (3900m) shape as intriguing races on a track set to be rated a Good 4 throughout the day. The rail sticks to its true position, with the first on an eight-race card set to jump at 11:50am AEST.

Sandown Cup Tip: Through Irish Eyes

Through Irish Eyes has turned the corner in recent times and can go on with the job in the 2025 Sandown Cup. The seven-year-old gelding won arrogantly at Bendigo three starts ago, and backed it up with a determined win over the hurdles at Warrnambool. He then went on to be beaten four lengths in the Listed Andrew Ramsden (2800m) when hitting the line strongly in restricted room, with the step up to the 3200m set to be beneficial for him here. Ethan Brown should have Through Irish Eyes stalking the speed throughout from barrier four, and with even luck, Through Irish Eyes can overhaul his rivals late on.

Australian Steeplechase Tip: Leaderboard

Leaderboard has been disappointing since his emphatic win two back at Pakenham, but he gets his chance to bounce back in the Australian Steeplechase. The son of Street Cry won impressively at Ballarat and then at Pakenham before falling in the Brierly (3450m) at Warrnambool and putting in a stinker on the flat at Mornington when beaten by over 30 lengths. Will Gordon will use barrier one to his advantage in this and look to lead from barrier to box, and as long as he is clean over the bigger fences, there is no reason why Leaderboard cannot get the better of Stern Idol in the Australian Steeplechase.

Australian Hurdle Tip: The Cunning Fox

The Cunning Fox continues to impress over the obstacles, and the reigning Galleywood Hurdle champion will be looking to add the Australian Hurdle to his record on Sunday. The six-year-old gelding managed to space Stern Idol three starts back at Pakenham and then got the better of Affluential and Right Now in the Galleywood in convincing fashion at Warrnambool. In the small field of seven, Tom Ryan will have The Cunning Fox settled just off the speed throughout, and with a clean pair of heels over the jumps, The Cunning Fox should be too good for his rivals.

Best Bet at Sandown: Whateley

Whateley has been nothing short of impressive when winning his last two starts, and this race looks perfect for him to dictate terms throughout once again. Tom Prebble on board with a 2kg claim, gets the son of Written Tycoon in with 59.5kg on his back, and with the lack of speed drawn underneath, he should not have to work too hard to hold the rail upon settling. With a relatively uncontested lead expect, it should be a case of jump, lead and win for Whateley.
