What Run To The Rose Day 2022
Where Rosehill Gardens Racecourse – James Ruse Dr, Rosehill NSW 2142
When Saturday, September 10, 2022
First Race 11:40am AEST

Racing heads to Rosehill Gardens on Saturday for a terrific 10-race card headlined by the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m). The track is rated a Soft 6 but there is a bit of rain forecast for the back end of the week, so we will be keeping a close eye on the weather closer to Saturday. The rail is out 5m for the entire course, which could favour on-pace horses as per recent weeks. Racing is scheduled to get underway at 11:40am AEST.

Race 1: Class 3 Highway Handicap (1400m)

Usually we aren’t too keen on these Highway races, but the win of Opal Ridge last Saturday has us a touch more excited for them. This is much harder though, with the current favourite a $7.50 chance. One horse that comes out of the race behind Opal Ridge is the Danny Williams-trained JALMARI, so we are happy to be with him on the seven-day back-up on another wet track. Amy McLucas is one jockey we don’t know much about, but we can tell you she road a winner in a Highway at Randwick on August 20, so she will be riding full of confidence. He is Group 3 placed in the autumn and will appreciate the cut in the ground.

Selections:

Race 2: Benchmark 72 Midway Handicap (1200m)

BLACK DUKE looks a good bet in the second, having his first run since a last-placed effort in the Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket in the autumn. Wandabaa was the winner of that race and Nimalee finished second before winning a Group 1 two starts later, so the form is hot out of the race. Now with Adam Duggan, Black Duke has the Blinkers off again, a gear change which saw him win first-up in October last time in, so connections will be hoping for a repeat performance. Jason Collett rides wet tracks better than anyone, so he will put the five-year-old in a lovely spot from barrier six, giving him every chance of getting back into the winner’s circle for the first time in 45 weeks.

Race 3: Benchmark 78 Handicap (2400m)

We have been with MONFELICITY in her last couple of runs, and while she hasn’t won while we’ve been tipping her, she has had excuses. The stars look to align on Saturday though, as she meets Impulsar 1.5kg better at the weights after going down by 1.3 lengths to him last start at Randwick over this trip. With James McDonald going on board, the David Payne-trained mare should get a lovely steer from the good gate and be able to be right in the finish. She’s had three weeks between runs, so she should be nice and fresh for this race and we expect her to be winning it.

Selections:

Race 4: Benchmark 78 Handicap (1800m)

We were with the Bjorn Baker-trained FUN FACT at massive odds last start, and he gave us a really good run for our money running fifth. There was enough merit in that run to stick with him as he steps out to 1800m second-up. Ideally, the track improves rather than gets worse, but he isn’t hopeless on soft tracks. Dylan Gibbons can send him forward from barrier five and try to run the race to suit, which looks more than doable on paper. He has a good second-up record and he gets better the further he goes, so this is winnable.

Selections:

Race 5: Benchmark 88 Handicap (1100m)

BACCHANALIA looks one of the standouts on Saturday’s card, but we have plenty of respect for the opposition, with horses like Clemenceau, Heresy and Remarque also resuming. The James Cummings-trained Bacchanalia has been terrific in his barrier trials, doing everything he’s been asked under his own steam. While he has drawn awkwardly out in barrier 12, James McDonald’s class should offset that, while the rain-affected track is going to be right up this son of Exceed And Excel’s alley. Last preparation, Bacchanalia ran second to Mazu in his first run for the preparation, before having two runs in stakes company at Morphettville where he was far from disgraced when firm in the market. He is a nice horse who can go to the next level this prep.

Selections:

Race 6: Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m)

James Cummings is hitting his straps at the right time of year, with eight wins from his past 50 starts – three of which were Listed or Group races. Three-year-old colt GOLDEN MILE resumed with a terrific second first-up in the Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m), hitting the line strongly behind Kibou. The son of Astern should have taken plenty of improvement out of that run a fortnight ago, so he should be going very close to winning this race against similar opposition. Sam Clipperton has kept the ride, and he has drawn beautifully in barrier two, allowing him to settle a bit closer in the run. He could be a really underrated commodity.

Race 7: Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m)

Past winners of this race suggest it is a ‘good horses race’. Bivouac, Anamoe and Pierro are among the big name winners of this race, so this year we want to be with the horse who we think will prove to be the best horse in the field over 1200m. For us, that horse is SEJARDAN. We’ve been happy to put a pen through the top-tier two-year-old form from the autumn, and so far that theory has proved to be correct, so we’re keen to be against the returning multiple Group 1 winner Fireburn. As for Sejardan, he has always looked like a horse who would improve with a bit of time. He had a relatively light autumn, winning the Todman Stakes (1200m) at Randwick, before not having much luck in the Golden Slipper (1200m). His trials have been super this time in, and while he’s drawn wide, there will be plenty of pace to set it up for a horse like Sejardan to finish right over the top. Big watch on Political Debate who resumes, while rank outsider Beunos Noches’ last-start sixth in the San Domenico Stakes (1100m) was better than it looks on paper for those chasing a long shot. Good race.

Selections:

Race 8: Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m)

MR MOZART resumes on Saturday in the Theo Marks Stakes over 1300m, and we are very confident that he will make it four wins in a row. The son of Snitzel finished his autumn campaign with three straight wins in Sydney, winning the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes, Group 3 Doncaster Prelude and Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas. Both of this entire’s trials have been perfect, with his latest being one of the better trials you will see. Trained by Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes and to be ridden by William Pike, Mr Mozart looks cherry ripe ahead of his first-up assignment. He’s won fresh in the past, he’s won at Rosehill and he is unbeaten on wet tracks, so he has all of his ducks in a row. He looks to get the run of the race from barrier three and he is very well weighted with just 54.5kg on his back. Have something on him in the Epsom Handicap too, because if he wins on Saturday, he will be exempt from ballot for the famous mile race in three weeks’ time.

Race 9: Group 2 Sheraco Stakes (1200m)

There is 13 mares in this year’s Sheraco Stakes, and seven of them are last-start winners, while two of the other six were Group 1 placed in their latest outing. Boom horses Espiona and Shades Of Rose share favouritism with online bookmakers, but they have to improve we think to be winning this race against this quality of horse. BELLA NIPOTINA is one mare we have plenty of time for, so we are happy to be with her after her good last-start win in the Carlyon Stakes at Moonee Valley over 1000m. The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained five-year-old won the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes on a Heavy 10 at Randwick in April and she then wasn’t beaten far by subsequent Group 1 winner Snapdancer in the Robert Sangster Stakes in Adelaide. She’s been overlooked here.

Selections:

Race 10: Benchmark 78 Handicap (1500m)

This is a tough way to finish the day. It’s a capacity field with plenty of differing formlines, but the first emergency is who we want to be with. Chris Waller and James McDonald combine with the untapped ARNOLD, who is looking for three straight wins should he gain a start in the race, which he should as Two Big Fari looks more likely to go to Dubbo for the Dubbo Cup on Sunday. Arnold has been really impressive this time in, winning well at Kembla Grange first-up to break his maiden, before going straight to a Benchmark 72 on the Kenso which he won by nearly two lengths. James McDonald has been on the son of Hinchinbook in both starts this prep, so it’s encouraging to see him stick with him again. The 1500m looks perfect for this horse now after two soft 1400m victories. Waller can train the trifecta in the last.
