Rosehill Betting Preview – January 30, 2021

Nine races will be run and won at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday afternoon on a day that marks the official beginning of the Sydney Carnival. Feature racing is the order of the afternoon, with Group racing including the Expressway Stakes for the sprinters and the Canonbury Stakes and Widden Stakes for two-year-old colts and fillies respectively. Plenty of rain is forecasted around Sydney this weekend, so we can expect to see the track start closer to a Heavy 8 than the earlier Soft 5 rating, while the rail is out +3m for the entire course. Race 1 will jump at 1:15pm local time.

Best Bet: Race 1 – Al Mah Haha #1

We may not see a more perfectly placed runner in 2021 than Tash Burleigh’s country galloper Al Mah Haha. The six-year-old gelding lines up in a Class 3 TAB Highway over 1500m in what is a seriously easier race than the stuff he has been contesting of late. The son of Al Maher finished second in a photo finish in last year’s Country Championship Final and was beaten under three lengths in The Kosciuszko and at Group 2 level in the Villiers Handicap behind Greysful Glamour. Jay Ford goes on from barrier eight, which will see him settle a touch better than midfield in the run. He should be too good.

Next Best: Race 8 – Mount Popa #2

Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes combine in the penultimate race with Tommy Berry and Mount Popa in a 1500m Benchmark 88. The gelding comes into this fresh off a seven-month break but has had the benefit of a trial here two weeks ago. The son of Maxios has had just the two runs in Australia, which saw him run fourth at Flemington before bolting in at Randwick over 2000m in Heavy 9 conditions. Drawn well in barrier four, he will be able to stalk the speed and should put race favourite Frosty Rocks to the sword in the straight. He looks a classy type who will only improve the further he gets out in trip.

Best Value: Race 5 – Starla #1

Starla is one we have always had a little bit of time for, so we see no reason why she should be nearly double figures here in a winnable race. The Chris Waller-trained mare has been in the placings in all four of her runs this campaign, with her most recent being a 0.8-length second to the talented Private Eye. Two starts earlier she was third behind Snapdancer and Tailleur, who are two mares with plenty of speed and ability. Up to 1400m here, James McDonald will get her in a midfield spot from barrier eight and can steam home over the top of them. She looks a great each-way bet.

Best ValueRace 5 – Starla (#1)$9.50 with Sportsbet
