Canonbury Stakes Betting Preview – January 30, 2021
The colts get their turn at Group 3 level here in the Canonbury Stakes. Seven of these have had a start on race day in the past, while just the four runners are on debut. Home Affairs and Construct share favouritism ahead of Giannis and Zethus. The speed looks to come from Conexy and Surplus Value, while Construct can be handy from the low draw.
Godolphin’s Zethus was an eye-catching debutant a fortnight ago when second to the talented Remarque. He had trialled reasonably well leading up to his first start, so the experience at the track would no doubt have done him a world of good. On debut he was a long way back and wide, but he still managed to cut into the margin late, suggesting that he was worth following. He has drawn the outside alley here, so he will likely get back again under Rachel King, but at the each-way price, we are happy to be on him.
Conexy has done nothing wrong to date, winning once and running second once in his two starts in Queensland. On debut he was beaten fair and square but gapped third, and then he came out to beat Baby Wong by half a length in a pairing that put eight lengths on the third horse. He’s had the benefit of a trial between runs and gets Hugh Bowman aboard from gate nine, which will see him roll forward and take some catching. He has definite each-way claims.
Equal favourite Construct has genuine winning chances here after running second to Magic Millions winner Shaquero on debut in the Breeder’s Plate. He has gone well in two trials since and gets the Snowden polish, which tends to be handy with two-year-olds. Drawn in barrier two under Jason Collett, he’ll nearly box seat and could well be too good for them late. It is worth noting that Tommy Berry has stuck with Montana Flash rather than sticking with Construct. If the money comes, this one is likely to be right in the finish.
