Widden Stakes 2021 betting preview – Saturday, January 30
The Group 3 Widden Stakes is for the two-year-old fillies over 1100m, and this year’s edition looks a race in three according to the market. Mallory is the current favourite, ahead of Total Babe and Vianello. Only the first four in race book order have had a start, so it has been a bit tricky to gauge a speed map, but both of Waterhouse & Bott’s runners have shown speed early and will likely be positive in the run.
We are with Total Babe here in this after she was only beaten 3.5 lengths on debut behind Enthaar and just half a length of Mallory. She had a pretty tough run that day and stuck on reasonably well and has had the benefit of another race and a trial since then, which would have brought her on significantly. She defeated She’s All Class in her trial which is as good a formline you’ll see for two-year-old fillies to date. She can lead all the way here under Tim Clark and stamp her claim towards the Golden Slipper.
If we put Total Babe on top, Mallory is the logical danger after she beat her home on debut. The Not A Single Doubt filly settled towards the tail of the field that day and really knuckled down to the task late to chase hard. She hasn’t been at the races since, but has trialled since where she was given a soft time of it in fifth. She did finish 1.5 lengths off Avaricious in that trial, who subsequently was 2.5 lengths behind Total Babe.
Chris Waller and James McDonald have to be respected when they combine, especially with two-year-olds, so Divina could represent some value here. She has had just the two trials to date where she has been too good in both. The margins haven’t been anything huge, but she has raced handily in both and pounced on the leaders to win. She can settle in a forward spot form gate seven and be in the money at odds.
