Roman Consul Stakes

The Roman Consul Stakes is a Group 2 race held at Rosehill racecourse that is run under set weight conditions for three-year-olds, with the race boasting a prize pool of $300,000.

Outside of the Roman Consul Stakes being run at Rosehill in 2000 and Warwick Farm in 2004, the race has been run exclusively at Randwick Racecourse. However, the 2023 edition of the Roman Consul will be run at Rosehill.

Since the inaugural running of the Roman Consul Stakes in 1979, the race was classified as a Listed race until 1983, before being upgraded to Group 3 grade from 1984 to 2004. From 2005 onwards the race has been run as a Group 2 contest.

As the Roman Consul Stakes is a three-year-old sprint race, it is used as a Sydney lead-up race for runners seeking to push onto the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

• 2024: Switzerland cruises to victory
  The Chris Waller-trained Switzerland ($5.00) was back to his brilliant best after claiming the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) in dominant fashion. The three-year-old Snitzel colt was too bad to be true, returning at this course and distance in the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m) on September 14, firing up badly in the middle stages before finishing last of nine. He surged through the line in a recent barrier trial to suggest he was back on track, and thanks to a superb steer by Nash Rawiller, that’s exactly what punters got on Saturday. He sat behind a hot tempo courtesy of the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Ikasara ($17.00) storming to the top in the early stages by Adam Hyeronimus, continuing to bowl along with some fast splits turning for home. The I Am Invincible colt was hanging tough in the final furlong as Switzerland cruised up along the inside running rail, while Coleman ($3.30) was mounting a late charge down the centre of the course under Kerrin McEvoy. It was all in vain, however, with Switzerland off and gone with prize, leaving Coleman, Yoshinobu ($26.00), and Ikasara left to fight out the minor money, while favourite backers were left scratching their heads regarding Spirit Of Wealth ($3.40) finishing last of the eight runners.
• 2023: King's Gambit makes a mess of rivals
  King’s Gambit ($5.00) charged home along the rail to score a dominant victory in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill. Tommy Berry elected to head straight to the rear of the field, estimating a strong tempo with Ozzmosis ($2.20) and Royal Tribute ($10.00) likely to surge for the lead, and that exactly was what eventuated. The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained colt simply bid his time as the inside running rail opened for the three-year-old and when Tommy Berry pushed the button, King’s Gambit letdown with a blistering turn-of-foot.
• 2022: Best Of Bordeaux fends them all off
  Best Of Bordeaux (+240) has led all the way to record an impressive win in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes at Randwick. After being challenged by Willinga Beast (+290) and Sweet Ride (+650) at the top of the home straight, the son of Sntizel fought them off and pulled away in the final 100m to claim a two-length victory.
• 2021: Paulele proves way too good in Roman Consul
  After being sent out as an odds-on favourite, Paulele (-111.11) proved that he was a class above in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes. Under the urgings of James McDonald, the son of Dawn Approach settled midfield and got a great cart into the race behind Tristate (+1900), before letting down with a blistering turn of foot claim the lead with 300m to go. Gleneagles (+850) and King Of Sparta (+850) finished off well to finish in second and third, respectively.
• 2020: Wild Ruler dominates rivals in Roman Consul Stakes
  The heavily backed and odds-on favourite Wild Ruler (-166.67) has taken out the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes with relative ease at Randwick. James McDonald made sure that his mount was never in any trouble during the run and once he eased off the heels of the leader, he let down with an explosive turn of foot. On The Lead (+1000) and Doubtland (+230) were no match for the winner in the final 300m, and they filled the placings two lengths behind Wild Ruler.
• 2019: Cosmic Force fights them all of in Roman Consul
  Peter & Paul Snowden and Tim Clark have combined with Cosmic Force (+180) to take out the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes at Randwick. After being challenged by Dirty Work (+2000) for most of the home straight, the son of Deep Field put pay to him with 100m to go and ran away from the fast-finishing Standout (+700) and Microphone (+190), who filled the placings.
