2020 Roman Consul Stakes betting preview
The Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes for three-year-olds is the second race on the card for Spring Champion Stakes Day at Royal Randwick. The event attracts a small field of five this year, but there looks to be a couple of up-and-coming stars. The Hawkes team have got the lightly raced Doubtland, who shares favoritism with the Snowden team’s Wild Ruler at $2.50 at the time of writing. The 2020 edition is set to jump at 1:45pm AEDT this Saturday.
The Hawkes team opted to send this 3YO colt down to Flemington for her second-up run to try and snare the Group 2 Danehill Stakes, and it proved to be a successful mission. She settled towards the rear of the field and needed plenty of luck at the 400m mark, but with 250m to go he got the split he wanted and absolutely flew through the middle of the pack. If he runs up to that effort here, he will take a power of holding out.
The Snowden team would have been impressed with the colt’s first-up run in the Listed Heritage Stakes a fortnight ago when he scored after taking a seat behind the leader. The official margin was under half a length, but he never really seemed in trouble throughout the run. He will be at the opposite end of the running compared to joint favourite Doubtland, who will be one of the backmarkers. If he can get a soft run up in front, he may prove too hard to catch.
If there is one runner who could prove a knockout hope, it is this Freedman-trained colt. He was left flat footed in the Danehill Stakes when Doubtland easily accounted for him, but prior to that he had shown signs of above-average ability. As always with small fields, tactics are crucial, and if he can get a nice run in transit, he will be looking to run into the minor money and perhaps a step further.
