Punt Drunk: Stray roo stops the show at Bairnsdale

Kangaroo

It’s Monday, but it comes with a twist this week, because the Warrnambool Racing Carnival gets underway tomorrow – and if you are not excited by that, then please get in the bin. The ‘Bool is a staple on the Australian racing calendar, so who is up to joining the #PuntDrunk team in heading down to the carnival next year?

The Wiz & the Queen

William Pike and Gai Waterhouse will team up for – can you believe it? – the first time with Nothinsweetaboutme in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet next Saturday. Having won four Victorian Group 1s this season, it is no surprise that the first lady of racing has made the call to the Wizard of the West. With two wins from three starts, the Waterhouse & Bott runner clearly has a bit of talent, and a win on Saturday might just set her up perfectly for the Queensland Oaks in a few weeks’ time.

Is there anything more Australian?

It is a Sunday afternoon in Bairnsdale, and a seven-race meeting is being run with plenty of locals in attendance. Some of the attendees clearly got a little too close to the action, however, with a kangaroo delaying the running of the second race. Skippy clearly just wanted to make a nuisance of himself causing, 10-minute delay which resulted in the remaining races on the card being pushed back. It took us back to the 2011 Hanging Rock Australia Day meeting where six kangaroos made themselves at home on the track and simply did not move, causing the abandonment of the last six races. Imagine the scenes if that ever happened these days? In the era of punting experts on Twitter? Dear, oh dear…

Punt Drunk’s best bet of the day

Formerly with Leon & Troy Corstens, the now Stephen Jones-trained Beauty Betty competed in tougher races in Victoria last campaign than what she goes up against today. Having finished seventh in a strong form race at her last start, and with two wins from three first-up runs, we expect the Swiss Ace mare to be too speedy for her rivals in her NSW debut.
