Punt Drunk: St Paddy’s ushers in massive few days for punters

The Office - St Patrick's Day

Punt Drunk Daily – March 17, 2021

Happy St Patrick’s Day, punters! Grab the ones you love and give them some attention this morning, because between now and Sunday you won’t see much of them. With some competitive racing to get involved in today, the start of the AFL season and round two of the NRL tomorrow night, the William Reid Stakes meeting on Friday night and then the Golden Slipper on Saturday… good luck to our better halves, and even better luck to our online betting accounts.

All in on Profiteer following Golden Slipper barrier draw?

He is the race favourite, and the Mick Price-trained colt Profiteer will not be far away from the front of the field throughout after drawing barrier five for the 2021 Golden Slipper. Most of the favoured runners have drawn well, with Stay Inside and Four Moves Ahead set to be close to the speed in the running. The late nominee Artorius will need to be at his best having drawn out in barrier 13, but the race looks to be set up perfectly for a swooper who can run out a hot 1200m. The Golden Slipper is often quite tricky to land a winner in, so be sure to keep your eye out for our full race preview over the coming days.

Bye bye, Cousin Tom

Having worked for the Lindsay Park establishment for 25 years, Tom Dabernig will be stepping down from his partnership with Ben Hayes at the end of this racing season. Dabernig has hinted he will go to South Australia and start up his own stable. He had only been in partnership with Hayes since July 2020 but tasted plenty of success in that time. The resurgence of So Si Bon is arguably one of the best stories, but their biggest win came in the spring when Personal took out the VRC Oaks. Hayes will continue the family theme at Lindsay Park when his younger brother JD steps up to be his co-trainer. It raised a few eyebrows when the news came across the Punt Drunk desk, but it’s 2021 and nothing really surprises us these days.

Punt Drunk’s best bet of the day

It is crazy that odds of $2.50 are available for Mystery Shot. He rarely puts in a bad run and has six wins from eight starts, including a tough victory last time out. He steps back to 1400m here after prevailing over the mile at Sandown when trapped three wide with no cover. From barrier seven, and with the 2kg claim from Lachie Neindorf, the gelding should head straight to the front and be hard to run down.

Sandown – Race 4 – BM84 Handicap (1400m)#1 Mystery Shot (7) $2.50 with Sportsbet
