Punt Drunk: Punters left fuming after Ararat and Wagga calamities

Punt Drunk horse racing news & views

Happy Hump Day, punters! There’s only two more days to get through until the weekend, and we have plenty of local gallops meetings to get us through the midweek slumps. Here’s some of the top stories floating around the traps as we look ahead to Wednesday’s racing action.

Punters robbed in controversial photo finish at Wagga

You’re counting your cash because the one on the inside has got the bob in and snared the second race at Wagga on Monday. You’re thinking that you’re going to treat the missus to a fancy dinner at the local pub (because you’re a classy type), and you’re also thinking you’re going to land higher up on the shelf the longer the afternoon rolls on. Well, guess what? All those plans are dashed, because somehow the horse on the outside of this photo has gotten up on the line and been declared the winner. There’s a reason why they call this ‘The Great Game’, but this isn’t one of them if you’re on the inside galloper.

100/1 winner voided in abandoned race at Ararat

If you backed the galloper that got dudded in the photo at Wagga on Monday and then had the 100/1 shot that got up in the fourth at Ararat, we suggest looking for some help ASAP. The top-weight Abraxos pulled the pants down of the favourite Creme De La Bomme and looked to have scored quite impressively. However, as you can see above, not all runners were given a fair start, so the race was abandoned and the result voided. Ah, the joys of the punt!

Should we have a break from racing over Christmas?

Craig Williams

As is the case every year, the question gets asked as to whether there’s too much racing over the Christmas period. Jockeys such as Craig Williams and Damian Lane have already taken time away from the pigskin in the lead up to Christmas, while the likes of Billy Egan and Jordan Childs, who tend to race most days in Victoria, would surely be looking for some time off. With little black-type racing until February, it looks the perfect time for some of our best jockeys to take some time away. So should racing continue in the meantime, or should we see a reduction in events? Let us know your thoughts below.
