Wednesday racing tips for Ipswich

Given the multitude of racing in South East Queensland over the past few days and the big weekend ahead, small fields are the order of the day for the midweek meeting at Ipswich. The track is rated a Good 4, the rail is out +4m the entire way, and the first jumps at 1:37pm local time.

Best BetRace 1 – Air Force Rocket (#1) $3.80 with Sportsbet

Kelly Schweida will leg up Michael Rodd, who recently relocated to Queensland, for the ride on Air Force Rocket. The two-year-old son of Air Force Blue has had two starts for two minor placings but has gapped the rest of the field both times, suggesting that the winner in both races was pretty smart. He does meet Portobello Road, who beat him comfortably, but race fitness and the extra time at the races since should be enough for Air Force Rocket to turn the tables. Barrier two suits, as he should lead or box seat under Rodd and, we hope, prove too good.

Next BestRace 3 – Samurai (#1) $5.50 with Sportsbet

Samurai returns to the races here for the first time since his last-placed performance in the Winx Stakes at Group 3 level in July. He’s been at the trials leading up to this, which should see him fit enough to fire first up. He’s been allocated the top weight of 60kg, but he should handle it well with the in-form Jag Guthman-Chester in the saddle. Samurai is a winner first up in the past, eats up 1350m and should resume as a winner.

Best ValueRace 4 – Sugar Buzz (#1) $6 with Sportsbet

Kyle Wilson-Taylor could ride a broomstick to victory at the moment, and we are happy to follow him aboard Sugar Buzz as the six-year-old gelding shoots for back-to-back wins. Under the top weight of 60.5kg, the apprentice jockey’s 3kg claim is a big help. The horse drops back considerably in trip after running 2100m last start, but he should be fit enough to get up on speed and tough it out. The form out of his race two starts ago has been franked by Fabricator winning since at Armidale, so all signs indicate Sugar Buzz can give this a shake.
