Punt Drunk: No love for Rekindling at Newmarket sales

Rekindling racing news

Happy Friday, punters! We have made it to the end of another working week, and tomorrow the Kingston Town Classic will draw down the curtain on another fantastic year of Group 1 racing.

If you have ended up in front after all we have been through, you’re either a bullshit artist or we’re just incredibly jealous! Either way, make sure to let us know what your highlight of the year was in terms of Group 1 performances.

Anyway, we’ll fill you in on stuff you might have missed and try to help you build a bank prior to the weekend of racing.

Three votes, Tycoon Bec

He was a bloody good footballer, and now apparently he’s a superb judge of horse as well. Chris Judd is a part of a small syndicate that owns a handful of horses trained by Matt Cumani, and on Thursday the runner he had naming rights for made her debut at Kyneton. Very similar to Judd’s own debut, his mare Tycoon Bec (named after his wife, Bec Judd) hit the scoreboard straight away with an impressive all-the-way win. Some people’s luck, hey…

Griffin to make remarkable comeback

Dan Griffin racing news

When Dan Griffin hung up the silks at the end of last season, the rest of the Gold Coast jockeys would have thought they were finally a chance to snare a riding premiership. But Griffin is set to make a comeback despite a blood disorder and an ongoing shoulder issue that caused him to bring the curtain down on his illustrious career in the first place. He’s won more premierships than we’ve had warm dinners, and it will take a brave punter to write him off in his comeback.

Melbourne Cup winner Rekindling goes unsold

Remember Rekindling, the horse that won the 2017 Melbourne Cup? Well, he was offered up at a recent auction at Newmarket over in the UK but went through unsold as a stallion prospect. The win in the Melbourne Cup was a clear flash in the plan by the galloper, who struggled to beat his rivals home in resulting races. Not only was he a let down on the track after that huge success, his fifth leg is clearly lacking the punch required.
