Punt Drunk: Neasham snaps up Mo’unga from Waller stable

Punt Drunk horse racing news & views

Ah, Wednesday, how we love you! We’ve made it through the start of the week and there’s better days ahead. We have plenty of racing to keep us going throughout today, with seven local gallops meetings.

Since we last spoke, we’ve had a future star leave the Chris Waller stable, plenty of chat about potential non-whip races, and an international superstar set to be lured to Sydney for the autumn.

Again, we’ll make this quick as the first race at Bairnsdale isn’t too far away from jumping!

Star colt Mo’unga leaves Waller stable

The rising three-year-old Mo’unga has amazingly been transferred from the Chris Waller yard to the in-form stable of Annabel Neasham. The colt showed what he was made of when dominating his rivals in Sydney for consecutive victories before heading to Melbourne to have a crack at the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas. Now, we’re not saying this is a bad decision by any means, but it’s left the team at Punt Drunk scratching their heads, because the bloke is a star and Waller loves a good cash-earner, doesn’t he? Boy, it’d be nice to know what happened behind closed doors…

Jockeys weigh in on proposed whip changes

Now, before we start, this is purely an opinion, and if you don’t like it, well then that’s fine. (It’s not really, but it’s 2020 so we have to say that.) Anyway, there’s been plenty of talk over the last couple of days about racing in Victoria becoming whip-free, and a majority of those views are coming from people who don’t use them on race day. However, the jockeys – you know, the ones who use the whip when onboard those horses we punt on – are adamant they are needed. Jamie Kah is the latest in a line of hoops to suggest they are needed for safety because, as we know, horses can play up at any given time.

O’Brien star coming to Sydney?

OK, maybe that’s jumping the gun a little bit, but the ATC is set to lure Mogul, the winner of the Hong Kong International Vase on Sunday at Sha Tin. He’s already a two-time Group 1 victor, and if the ATC gets its way he’ll be a potential three timer by the end of March. The TAB has put him down as an $8 chance behind fellow import Addeyyeb and Caulfield Cup winner Verry Elleegant, who are both at $6. If he does turn up on our shores, then how bloody good an event will that be? We know we’ll be tuning in for it!
