Punt Drunk: How bloody good is the ‘Bool?

Grand Annual - Gold Medals and Zed Em

It’s Friday, somehow we have made it through the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival in one piece, and for the last time this year – how bloody good is the ‘Bool? The 2021 Grand Annual Steeplechase will go down in history, and the hangovers that are kicking in this morning will be spoken about for weeks to come. Add in the fact the Wagga Gold Cup Carnival kicked off in fine fashion, and boy, oh boy, it has been a fun week to be a punter!

Gold Medals tops podium in Grand Annual

Symon Wilde and Clayton Douglas would have been the toast of Warrnambool last night after they combined with Gold Medals to claim the Grand Annual Steeplechase. It was a race for the ages as the two old rivals Gold Medals and Zed Em battled it out over the last 600m of the 5500m race. They cleared the last jump together and went stride for stride down the home straight before Gold Medals kicked clear to win his second Grand Annual Steeplechase. What a race it was, what a call it was by Ric McIntosh, and what a bloody carnival it was! We hope you managed to back a winner or two over the last three days.

#RockyForm stands up in Wagga Town Plate

We do not mind throwing one of our own under the bus every now and then, but a certain N. Lloyd has always told us that Rockhampton form is the best form. It comes with a tinge of hometown bias from HorseBetting’s Queensland racing expert, but yesterday in the Wagga Town Plate he was bang on the mark. This time last year, Marway was taking out races up in Rocky, and yesterday he deadset pissed in the Wagga Town Plate. If you took the $2.90 on offer for the Mark Newnham-trained sprinter, you were counting the cash a long way out!

An Explosive piece of history

Can Explosive Jack for Ciaron Maher & David Eustace join Bart Cummings and Dayana in the Derby record books? Dayana won four Derby events back in 1972: the VRC Derby, South Australian Derby, Western Australian Derby and WA’s Australian Derby. Then we have Explosive Jack, who has taken out the Tasmanian Derby and Australian Derby this year. Silver Sharpe for Tommy Smith completed a similar feat in 1970, whilst Tulloch grabbed three derbies of his own in 1957. Imagine if Explosive Jack can join those names…

Punt Drunk’s best bet of the day

The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Maranoa will go around as a hot favourite in the Wagga Guineas this afternoon. The son of Snitzel looks set to get a quiet time out in front, and with Jean Van Overmeire sticking on board, look for the pair to make this a genuine rolling tempo and kick clear at the top of the straight.

Best BetRace 6 – Maranoa (#10) $2.40 with Sportsbet
