The 2021 Wagga Gold Cup will be run and won on Friday, and a capacity field of 16 (with two emergencies) has been assembled. There is a bit of speed engaged here with Knight’s Order, Yonkers, Inverloch and Roland Garros all going to go forward. Yonkers is the clear favourite with online bookmakers, while Spirit Ridge, Paths Of Glory and Mr Marathon Man are the only other runners in single digits.

The Richard & Michael Freedman-trained Paths Of Glory was excellent when beating the likes of Zaaki and Hang Man to win the Group 3 JRA Plate at his most recent start. Coming back from a Group 3 victory to a Listed race and only putting on 4kg reads well in our book. Barrier four is ideal for this grey son of Mastercraftsman, and Rachel King stays aboard. The 2000m might be his pet distance.

Yonkers will be extremely hard to beat, but it is worth noting that he has drawn barrier 15 and so may not start. If he does start, however, we cannot ignore him. The son of Medaglia d’Oro is a go-forward horse, so he will be sent to the front from the sticky gate, and with Knight’s Order drawn in gate 12, he should get a nice cart across. The five-year-old gelding absolutely bolted in at Caulfield last time out over this distance, defeating seasoned gallopers Another Dollar and The Lord Mayor by nearly five lengths. He is right in this.

We get a bit of a price about the Hayes & Dabernig-trained Huntly Castle as he rises to Listed level. The four-year-old son of Sebring comes off a win in the Murrumbidgee Cup over 1800m at this track and is undefeated at Wagga from three starts, so he has somewhat of a home-track advantage. His first win at Wagga came over the 2000m, and his dominant win over 1800m last start suggested that the extra 200m will be of no concern either. Blaike McDougall will do the steering from barrier 10, which will see him in the second half of the field, and we can expect him to be motoring home late.
