Punt Drunk: Favourites flop on bloodbath long weekend for punters

Red Wedding - Game of Thrones

Punt Drunk Daily – 9/3/2021

Imagine being really excited for a Monday on the punt and then getting brought back to reality quite quickly? Well, that was us yesterday, and now we feel like we need a pick-me-up as we all do on a Tuesday.

We have had 16 Group races since Saturday afternoon, and only one of the favourites in those races got the job done. You hate to see it, to be honest.

However, there is still one thing we can rely on…

Back Kah, go buy a bar!

Imagine being in as red-hot punting form as what Jamie Kah is in with the whip in hand? Yesterday’s Adelaide Cup meeting was the first time Kah had returned home for some time, and didn’t she make an immediate impact? Having won three of the first four races, it was safe to say the trip across the border was worth it for the current leader in the Victorian jockeys premiership. In particular, the win on Seradess in the opener for Mark Kavanagh could not have been any more impressive. The two-year-old filly showed a clean pair of heels and put her rivals away in a couple of strides, suggesting there are a couple of handy races coming her way this autumn on the back of two wins to begin her career.

Even on a Monday we struggle

The TAB released a market early on Monday morning for both Tralee Rose, the favourite in the Adelaide Cup, and Entente, the favourite in the Canberra Cup, to run a drum. However, both runners failed to run a placing despite jumping at $1.90 and $3 respectively. It was a blowout in the Canberra Cup, with Mr Marathon Man beating home the likes of Dadoozdart and Aussie Nugget. Not to be outdone, the runner-up from last year’s Adelaide Cup, Good Idea, managed to go one better this time, smashing his rivals by close to four lengths thanks to a perfect steer from the Queensland-based Ben Thompson. Both favourites ended up finishing fourth and will have left connections with plenty to ponder before they step out onto the track again. Also, it is safe to say the $18 on offer for Tralee Rose to win the Melbourne Cup was a touch of an overreaction, but she is still one to watch going forward.

Tuesday’s Racing Tips – March 09, 2021

Punt Drunk’s best bet of the day

Having just missed at the Sandown Hillside last start, the drop back to country racing looks ideal for Harlem Blues. Stepping up to the 1100m seems perfect as well, so we are ready to load up.
