Punt Drunk : COVID Blow – McEvoy & Berry Ruled Out Magic Millions

Punt Drunk horse racing news & views

Punt Drunk’s Daily News – Wednesday, 30th December 2020

It is Wednesday right? We’re confused, it’s that tricky non-hangover period of the Christmas/New Year period, and we just don’t know what day of the week it is. Thankfully, with plenty of racing to keep us occupied today that is the last of our concerns and building a bank is in the front of our mind.

We’re two days out from a new year, and another hangover to add to the holiday season. So, we’ll make this edition of Punt Drunk nice and easy for you because the first at Coffs Harbour isn’t too far away!

Hobart, you had one job.

When your track looks like it has had a few cheese slices melt into the track, then you’re just about no hope of hosting a race meet, let alone the Tasmanian Guineas. The featured meeting for Hobart had to be postponed on Sunday, and has since again been abandoned for the rescheduled meeting on Wednesday. The large “turf plugs” you can see have done sweet FA to help repair the markings on the track and as you can tell they haven’t exactly plugged have they? Safety is paramount for racing, but it’s as safe as Joe Burns’ test career.

Nah mate, I’ll stay home thanks.

Magic Millions

Who’s to begrudge any of the star NSW jockey’s from not heading to the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions card in a fortnight’s time? Thanks to the latest Covid-19 outbreak, the QLD government is forcing all travellers from greater Sydney to endure a mandatory 14 day quarantine. The likes of Kerrin McEvoy and Tommy Berry have rightly turned around and said nah thanks, I’m good and have opted to stay home with their family. Now, we love the Gold Coast, we’ll let you pretend like you’re shocked but having to sit in a hotel for 2 weeks staring at a wall, would be one of the biggest teases you will ever come across.

Too bad to be true.

This time last week, Chris Waller and connections were enjoying the hype around the boom two-year-old colt Shaquero, but after a genuine shitshow at Eagle Farm as a $2.20 favourite everyone was left scratching their heads. Plan B looks to be the go to now with the one time favourite for the 2YO Classic looking set to run in a race just seven days out from the featured event. However, it usually is a winning formula with the likes of Houtzen, Sunlight and Exhilarates all winning an 1100m race the week prior to going on to win the big cheque the following week. Does lightning strike for the fourth time this time around? Well after the year we have had, who bloody knows.
