Another Group 2 on Saturday is the Chandon Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) for three-year-olds. A field of 12 has been assembled for the $200,000 event, but that number is likely to be lowered with, six runners also engaged at Friday’s Kembla Grange meeting. The speed at this stage will come from Yaletown, but he could come out if he starts in the final race of the day at Kembla. If that is the case, Poland will lead from the inside alley. The market has struggled to sort this one out yet, with Impecunious the $5.50 favourite ahead of Hungry Heart and Elizabeel.

Hungry Heart has been a bit of a myth since winning the Sweet Embrace 12 months ago in good style, but she has failed to win since. She ran second in three straight races in all of the Princess Series races, and then finished seventh in the Thousand Guineas. The three-year-old Frankel filly trialled well in the lead up to this campaign but was a bit plain in her first two runs at Group 2 and Group 1 level. She finds herself at the 1500m which will suit third up, she gets a nice gate and is likely to be up against a small field, so this is her chance to get back in the winner’s stall. This is her last chance, otherwise she is in the bin forever.

Mike Moroney has a nice team in Sydney on Saturday, and Poland looks a terrific hope, especially if all of the expected scratchings arrive. Drawn barrier one under Kerrin McEvoy, he will boot through and lead, and could get a picnic out in front. He won the Autumn Stakes last start over 1400m at Caulfield, beating Amish Boy who placed in last week’s Newmarket Handicap. He was then a late scratching on race morning in the Caulfield Guineas, where he was a genuine chance. His best form is on the dry track, but he has placed in heavy going conditions and being from So You Think he should handle the wet track if the rain arrives.

Bazooka may well be the overs in the race, with the David Payne gelding likely to firm if the rain arrives. While the son of Smart Missile has won just the one from 15, he has placed second five times, with two of those at Group 3 level behind North Pacific and Holyfield, with the former coming on a Heavy 10 track. He will box seat from barrier two under Jason Collett, and with very little speed in the race he could be right within striking distance with plenty of sprint left in his legs. He finished two lengths off Kiku at Warwick Farm 10 days ago over 1300m, and was closing nicely so the 1500m should suit.
