What Pakenham Cup Day 2022
Where Pakenham Racing Club – 420 Nar Nar Goon–Longwarry Rd, Tynong VIC 3813
When Saturday, December 3, 2022
First Race 12:35pm AEDT

Racing heads to Melbourne’s south-east on Saturday afternoon for Pakenham Cup Day, where a massive nine-race program is set down for decision. Despite the track being rated a Soft 6 at the time of writing, with perfect conditions forecast for the Pakenham area in the lead up to Saturday, we expect to be racing on a Good 4 for Cup Day. Racing gets underway at 12:35pm AEDT, with the rail in the true position for the entire circuit.

Pakenham Cup Top Tip: Future Score

The Listed Pakenham Cup (2500m) is the feature event of the day on Saturday, and we are expecting the Matt Cumani-trained Future Score to walk away with the majority of the $300,000 on offer. Despite being on the fifth line of betting with online betting sites at $10, the seven-year-old gelding looks to building nicely into a summer campaign. He wasn’t beaten all that far by Banker’s Choice in a Ballarat Cup when racing in the worst part of the track over 2000m. He gets out to his preferred distance range third-up and approaching peak fitness is sure to take some beating. He draws to gain every favour in running from barrier one under Fred Kersley and coming back onto a firmer deck is only going to help his cause, boasting a record of 18: 4-1-6 on Good tracks. He looks to be the superior stayer in the event and with just 55kg on his back, Future Score looks a great bet in the Pakenham Cup.

Best Bet at Pakenham: Najem Suhail

Firmer ground is a massive plus for the Robbie Griffiths & Mathew de Kock-trained Najem Suhail and on recent form, looks a clear best bet of the day at Pakenham. The five-year-old broke his Australian maiden at Sale two starts back when leading throughout and putting 3.25-lengths before chasing home Snapper at Flemington on November 5 when finishing second. He managed to beat home Hypothetical on that day who has since come out and bolted in at Ballarat franking the form. From barrier 12, Blake Shinn will need a bit of luck in finding the rail, but if afforded that luxury, Najem Suhail is a genuine sprinter and has the ability to burn the candle at both ends. With $4.50 on offer with online bookmakers, we’re hoping Najem Suhail can build us a bank ahead of the quaddie legs.

Next Best at Pakenham: Corner Pocket

The return of the Lindsey Smith-trained Corner Pocket is one of the highlights of the program and we expect he will prove hard to gun down first-up from a three-month break. He was beaten just over a length when first-up at Moonee Valley at the start of the spring but was put away for a summer/early autumn campaign in the search for firmer decks. He gets that her on Saturday and from barrier one, is set to gain the run of the race throughout. Thomas Stockdale hops on board claiming 2kg, bringing him down to 58kg and considering he has a win to his name over Mr Brightside earlier in the year, he certainly brings an element of class to this BM100. With even luck at a crucial point, we expect Corner Pocket to sprint the better and get his summer campaign off to a winning start.

Best Value at Pakenham: Diamonds Inthe Sky

In what looks a day full of value, we are happy to side with the Peter Moody-trained Diamonds Inthe Sky early on in the card. The five-year-old mare simply hates a rain-affected tracks, so put a line through her entire winter campaign and her first-up run behind Hypothetical. First-up the track might have been rated a Good 4, but immediately the track got a downgrade to a Soft 6 at Ballarat. Her record on firmer decks in much more respectable and from barrier six with Linda Meech on board should take some catching. Diamonds Inthe Sky looks to gain an uncontested lead and with Meech on board, we hope it is another case of Linda – Leader – Legend.
