Recent Newcastle Gold Cup results

  • The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Military Mission ($16.00) bounded over the top late in the day to score in the Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup. Rachel King found herself in the rare chasing position aboard the five-year-old gelding, unable to press forward from barrier 12. They had no choice but to drag back and sit in the three-wide line turning for home, producing a quality turn-of-foot to chase down the very game Spirit Ridge (+1500) who continued to cling on, settling for the quinella spot. It was a bold effort by the winner considering the pattern of the race, as Spirit Ridge and Hosier ($11.00) looked set to battle things out with 200m to run; however, it was a perfectly timed steer from Rachel King, securing her fourth victory aboard Military Mission and chalking up his sixth-career win.
  • After claiming victory in the Listed Wyong Cup two weeks earlier, the Chris Waller-trained Durston ($4.20) has completed the double by taking out the Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup. James McDonald gave the son of Sea The Moon a 10 out of 10 ride saving all the ground by running up the rail, before booting clear with 250m to go. With the leader off and gone with the prize, Carif ($19) and Arapaho ($7.50) were left to fight out the minor placings over the last 200m.
  • Jeff Penza and Chris Waller combined with Great House to take out the Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup, which topped off a great day for Penza, who brought up a riding treble. After settling mid-field in the Newcastle Gold Cup, and making his run at 600m mark, the son of Galileo found the outside and let down with a strong finishing burst. Although the eventual winner felt the pinch late, he built a big enough lead to hold on from the fast-finishing Quick Thinker ($20) and No Compromise ($7.50).
  • After years of trying and falling short, Kris Lees has finally landed his maiden hometown cup with Mugatoo. Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, Mugatoo ($2.40) settled midfield and inched closer to the leaders approaching the corner. After taking a few strides to balance up, the son of Henrythenavigator began to lengthen stride nicely and ran away from Hush Writer ($5) and Attention Run ($26).
  • Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott have claimed their second Newcastle Gold Cup in three years, with Hush Writer ($5) fighting off his rivals to win the Group 3 contest in record time. Tim Clark settled the son of Rulership behind the speed, before pulling out on the home turn to stake his claim in the final 300m. Both Hush Writer and Attention Run ($13) battled down the straight, but the class of the winner got him through in the end, with the race favourite Our Candidate ($2.90) running home nicely into third.
